Day out at the Blue John caves in glorious hot weather. The descent down into the cave with our tour guide Brian was very informative and humorous. Be sure to ask him what 'Nouch' means, although you wont find out until you're on your way back! The caves are truly impressive. Make sure you have trainers and and a jumpers as it's wet and a bit cool. We were a bit worried that we would feel claustrophobic and there are only a couple of areas that are narrow and low. When I say narrow I mean you can touch both sides of the cave walls at the same time. The first is going down from the entrance (39 steps) followed by another section 100 or so steps. Then the whole cave is opened up. To get to the second chamber you have to duck your head if you're tall but only for about 11 metres. So if you get worried about small spaces they aren't horrendous and don't last long. We had a...

The centre itself was clean and tidy and had clear instructions on how to navigate the centre safely.

Unfortunately, the car park ticket meter only takes coins, so not notes or cards, which was a little frustrating.

With covid-19 no one is dealing with cash and we found it quite difficult to get change. So, if you are planning on parking there, make sure you have change.

The toilets were very clean and tidy and were a very welcome sight after a few hours of walking up Mam Tor.

Plus there was a quaint little stream running beside the car park which was lovely to walk next to.

The whole day and experience was pleasant and I would...

Castleton visitor centre is a nice centre with a big car park suitable for visiting tourists. The only problem is, if you have a campervan it's hard to find a big enough spot. There are spots big enough, but cars park in them, they should be labelled for campers. The visitor centre itself is quite nice, with souvenirs to buy, a lovely big cafe, with out door area too, a tiny "museum" and even the option to take equipment for litter picking. Very original and interesting encouraging visitor s to keep the town clean and tidy. Lots of leaflets available for nearby...

After spending most of my teen and adult life caving in the peaks. I’m ashamed to say I’d never actually spent much time above ground exploring the landscape and villages other than the pubs we used to go to after a trip. Well now I’m kicking myself as Castleton is beautiful the walks and hikes around this village are simply stunning and the village makes for a great start. There is everything you need there. Car parks, loos , shops etc. plus you have all the show caves to visit and plenty of places for food and drinks. Plus Blue John don’t forget the Blue John.

Unpleasant experience. I've ordered coffee, peace of cake and paninies ham and cheese. Coffee and cake, no problem, done in 5 minutes. I've been told I have to wait for sandwiches 10 minutes. I said OK. After asking about food twice and half an hour later I've received my order. Bacon instead of ham and burnt bread. Message to stuff. When you say 10 minutes that means 10 minutes not half an hour. And how hard is to do a hot panini properly?
