Greenhead Park is just over the road from us, and has really come into its own during the times of Covid19. People started really using the park, and it has been a place for humans to smile and wave at other humans, in a solitary and lonely time for many folk. We got 2 puppies and they are having great fun exploring, bouncing around, seeing other people and other doggies. There are plenty of bins, and a water fountain, which is great if you have 2 exuberant pups. There are 2 cafés, one in the conservatory, which does outstanding breakfasts, and the other by the tennis courts which does lovely loaded fries and scrummy icecreams. There's a bandstand where there are free concerts put on during the warmer months. Tennis courts (free), a skatepark, bowls, petanque, park runs, walking groups and a strange game played on the courts but with ping-pong bats instead of rackets! There are special benches where people can sit if they're in need of a chat, and passers by are encouraged to reach out and say hello. The park has helped many people in this confusing and disconnected time, where everything (for obvious reasons) has seemed to involve remote virtual video calls, and where folk have struggled with their mental health. On sunny days the park has filled up with people enjoying the outdoors and connecting with friends, and is filled with laughter and joy! Kids can play in the various play areas, one with a zip line which I'm aways tempted to try myself (but haven't thank goodness!) Come to the park and join...
Read moreI cannot say a bad word for this park it is absolutely fabulous place. A Victorian National Heritage Lottery Funded large undulating park enclosed by cast iron railings with several entrances and loads of free parking on the roads around. It has a long drive from the main gates to a WWI & II memorial passing a café selling refreshments and cake, inside a huge dog friendly conservatory, a formal privet lined garden, a large paddling pool and a fountain and flowerbeds. As you approach the memorial there's a new adventure style play area and lake with plenty of wildlife around. Then at the memorial there are steps to a wrap around huge stone veranda with paths around the side too one side being woodland, the other leading to a huge open field, miniature railway, tennis courts, bowling greens, French boules, skate park and another play area and an everyday café with function room that does bacon butties and more at very reasonable prices. You can easily spend a whole afternoon or more here. There is also a Parkrun on Saturday morning at 9am (timed free running for fun) for all and a kids one on Sunday 10am which we have been to on several occasions. If coming to Parkrun by car make sure you arrive at least 30mins before hand to get a parking space as there is regularly 600 runners every weekend now. Buses also run regularly passed the park but if walking, it's about 10 minutes literally from the town centre, just off...
Read moreThis is a lovely park, always popular with families with little children, an adventure play area full of well maintained swings, slides, climbing and other activities. Other people walking Thier dogs and wonder of wonder, no dog poo !!. Lots of different areas in the park to see and walk through. And a beautiful pond with ducks and swans, these are delightful, I spoke to a lovely man who feeds them daily and who knows who's who on the pond. A great mix of people in the park, from older couples, grandparents, Mums and. Dad's, young couples, kids on bikes, scooters and there is so much room no chance of problems. The spring and summer will bring the flowers and plants into bloom. The park is very close to Huddersfield, the only problem is finding parking in the streets surrounding the park. I have had problems locating my car when returning home , maybe a method of identifying the entry gates by number would help people who are new to the area, so we know which gate we used to enter the park would help. Today is freezing cold, we went there, and had a loveky, if shorter time than usual due to the cold. As always there was plenty of people...
