What an incredible experience! Absolutely fascinating tour conducted by volunteers who are passionate, knowledgeable and friendly. Happy to answer questions throughout. It really felt like they tailored the experience to the people being shown around, asking questions with genuine interest in us and adding in information about the geology and found objects that they knew would appeal to our group.
The areas explored are well lit and easy to move around in. Guides are quick to point out potential issues (correct ways to descend ladders safely).
All in all it was a tour that revealed lived experience, local Liverpool history, geology, engineering, family drama, Williamson's biography and speculative (well informed) musing.
Don't miss an opportunity to visit and be sure to make a donation to keep this vital work preserving (and expanding the reach of) such incredible spaces afloat for future...
Read moreIncredible part of Liverpool history uncovered, by hand , by a small group of dedicated volunteers. The photos and videos do not do the place justice, the size, depth and scale of what they have dug out is unbelievable. The artifacts they have uncovered by sifting through the rubble are on display and gives insight into the eras when the tunnels were filled in. I have been twice and guides Lynn, Colin and Mandy knew so much about the history - not only of Williamson and his tunnels but of Liverpool in general. The safety of the tunnels is paramount - we were given a hard hat, hi-viz jacket and all steps have been taken to make accessibility safe. Sadly, they have had to stop digging. The tours are free, they offer a yearly membership for just £5 which has lots of benefits. I think if they charged a fee for such excellent tours they could...
Read moreFrom the moment you enter underground you are simply blown away with not only the size and complexity of the tunnels and chambers but also the amount of work The Friends of Williamson Tunnels have carried out down there. Every comer you turn round or passage you exit from just leads to more and more intrigue and excitement. Our guide Peter was fantastic and full of knowledge and history and having spent 10 years volunteering here had "hands on" experience which he relayed to our party in such an engaging manner I could have listened to his stories and recall of history for hours-what a great guy! I would 100% say visit here and I will be making a point of visiting again and as often as possible going forward as things are changing and evolving all the time. Great work the team have done hear and I would have paid double to see the...
