I was lucky enough to have a seasonal job working for Continental Landscapes as one of the park keepers here. A very popular spot for local workers to chill out; a great place to lunch;also popular with tourists, travellers and even homeless people. The most surprising aspect of this little park in one of London's busiest shopping hubs was the level of wildlife I encountered! Apart from the usual suspects (pigeons, gulls, mice and rats) I observed at least two families of fledgling blackbirds, gangs of starlings, wrens and the obligatory friendly robin. Most exciting of all was the visit of various members of a kestrel family! Full of people at lunchtime if the weather´s nice, or quiet in the evening, there´s always a nice relaxed atmosphere and the old (quite tall) chestnut trees give amazing shade in the summer. But when things start improving it is a pleasant space to sit and read, or have a quick break from the office with a sandwich and coffee...alone or in company (when permitted). I once saw a small mouse whilst eating my lunch one afternoon...then in a flash a kestrel swooped down, took it and was gone. Right place...right time I suppose. Loads of wildlife in central London if you're patient and know where to look. Enjoy the gardens when...
