Manchester City Council is the local government authority for Manchester, a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England. It is composed of 96 councillors, three for each of the 32 electoral wards of Manchester. The council is controlled by the Labour Party and led by Sir Richard Leese. There is one Liberal Democrat councillor (former MP for Manchester Withington from 2005-15, John Leech), and one Green Party councillor. Joanne Roney is the chief executive. Many of the council's staff are based at Manchester Town Hall.
Manchester was incorporated in 1838 under the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 as the Corporation of Manchester or Manchester Corporation. It achieved city status in 1853, only the second such grant since the Reformation. The area included in the city has been increased many times, in 1885 (Bradford, Harpurhey and Rusholme), 1890 (Blackley, Crumpsall, part of Droylsden, Kirkmanshulme, Moston, Newton Heath, Openshaw, and West Gorton), 1903 (Heaton), 1904 (Burnage, Chorlton cum Hardy, Didsbury, and Moss Side), 1909 (Gorton, and Levenshulme), 1931 (Wythenshawe: Baguley, Northenden, and Northen Etchells), and Ringway in 1974. A new Town Hall was opened in 1877 (by Alderman Abel Heywood) and the Mayor of Manchester was granted the title of Lord Mayor in 1893.
Under the Local Government Act 1972 the council was reconstituted as a metropolitan borough council in 1974, and since then it has been controlled by the Labour Party. In 1980, Manchester was the first council to declare itself a nuclear-free zone. In 1984 it formed an equal opportunities unit as part of its opposition to Section 28.
Elections are usually by thirds (a third of the seats elected, three years in every four), although the 2018 and 2004 elections saw all seats contested due to substantial boundary changes. Labour has controlled a majority of seats in every election since the council was reconstituted. Between 2014 and 2016 Labour occupied every seat with no opposition. In the local elections held on 5 May 2016, former Manchester Withington MP, John Leech, was elected with 53% of the vote signifying the first gain for any party other than Labour for the first time in six years in Manchester and providing an opposition for the first time in two years. On 7 March 2017, it was reported that City Centre Councillor Kevin Peel had been suspended from the Manchester Labour group after reports of bullying. He sat as an independent, still taking the Labour Group whip until he rejoined Labour. On 24 July 2019 it was reported that Majid Dar (Ancoats and Beswick) had been suspended by the...
Read moreI unfortunately had the displeasure of a visit to Manchester City late last year as i had to attend a important appointment with a solicitor who's office is based in the City. I drove around for absolutely ages trying to find a parking spot until I had to park or I would have missed my appointment Found a parking space in an extortionately expensive car park and rushed to get my ticket which I believe was a staggering £8.00 for 2 hours the payment machine on this day was faulty and would not take the last 10 pence which i was trying to put in to make the total up to the full £8.00. So as I was going to miss my appointment and so I put the ticket in the window for the £7.90 and hoped that the parking attendant would see that i had try to pay the proper amount but sadly as so often the case and after a nice commission this attempt to pay was ignored and i received a ticket. I thought i would appeal and someone would take pity on me, but i forgot all about it as one of my parents became ill and i had to rush to their bed side in London. Where incidently i found a reasonably priced parking area immediately. on my return from Essex I had a nasty letter from a debt collecting agency demanding £157.00 or they would take my things. I thought that an appeal would sort it out but i was too late the appeal had to be within 2 weeks of getting the ticket and i had been away for months. I am a single parent of 5 children which was sadly reduced to 4 children due to medical negligence and brain tumour, which was the reason for my visit to Manchester in the first place. I work full time and rush around trying to make ends meet and keep everybody happy. What does this fine mean to me. Its new school shoes or 2 weeks of shopping, money toward my gas bill, swimming lessons a trip for my children to see their grandparents. For Manchester City council it is a drop in the ocean which certainly doesn't pay towards adequate parking or working pay and display machines. So in future I will avoid Manchester as they are a greedy self serving bunch who charge rediculous amounts for parking in a City which is really just Northern City pretending to be London. Well sadly It fails dismally and £157 would buy you 2 return tickets to London and back which you could get to in 2 hours and see a real...
Read moreI'm Yun from Korea. I lost my bike in Manchester but many people did donate for me. I am now in Argentina. I want to talk about donations.
First of all, thank you to those who sent me donations. With the help of many people Nick has collected 3535 pounds, and ukmtp has collected 667 pounds.
ukmtp sent me a donation (667 pounds). I was assisted by Lee Hindle. And when it was deposited into my account, the money was transferred to Lee Hindle's account. I can not speak English well. When I buy things I need to travel, Lee will buy them.
But there was a problem. We used 2372 pounds to buy bikes from donations. And Nick bought camping equipment. The problem is that the remaining money is still on Lee Hindle's bankbook. The total donation is 4202 pounds(3535 + 667).
I have been worried for a long time. And I wrote this because I thought I should inform the people who sent me the donation.
Thanks again to those who gave me a donation.
Hello, Mayor, I am a Korean who has lost my bike, I can continue my journey with the help of the mayor of Manchester and many friends. Although I lost my bike, it was an honor to be able to experience the UK as a country of gentlemen.
Thanks again to the mayor and friends...
