I called the distillery on the 3rd September to ask if dogs were allowed during the whiskey tastings (not tours) as they are allowed in the shop. I was told by a young female that they could if I booked all 8 tickets or on the day simply check if anyone objected to our 2 dogs, which I thought would be fair in either outcome. I understand that not everybody loves a well travelled Westie.
I decided to book 3 tickets for our party of 4 with one person in reserve, in case the dogs were not allowed.
Today we arrived and approached a different member of staff, an older male, and I asked if the dogs were allowed, I was told no as the tasting was full (with two other couples). I said what I'd previously been told and he refused to ask if there were any objections to the dogs in a very abrupt and confrontational manner, which was mostly played out to a small crowd. He then went on to say maybe one dog but he'd draw the line at two which I thought was completely irrelevant considering his previous comments. I was then asked who had told me this and that he found it hard to believe.
I write this review as I just don't understand why he thought it was ok to act in this manner to a question I had been primed to ask by another member of staff.
I wish his talk about whiskey had been as passionate, the dogs might have also given the assembled room a bit more atmosphere.
This was overall a very...
Besitzer: Distell (Burn Stewart Distillers Ltd.) / Gründung: 1798 / Besucherzentrum: ja / Produktionsvolumen: ca. 1 Mio. Liter p. a. / 2 Wash Stills / 2 Spirit Stills / 4 Wash Backs / Region: Islay & Islands ..... The Tobermory & Ledaig Distillery is probably one of the most beautiful in Scotland. However, taste is a matter of debate, but our comment is based on the fact that this ensemble was given an entry on the Scottish Heritage List. The distillery was founded towards the end of the 18th century, but with an already lengthy period of closure in the 19th century, it cannot be concluded that business success was a constant feature of this distillery from then on. It was not until the end of the First World War that it flourished again under the management of DCL (Distillers Company), only to close its doors again in 1930, i.e. without the effects of the Second World War, but under the influence of the Great Depression and Prohibition (USA). Despite a change of name, a new attempt in 1972 failed only 3 years later and thus topped the series of entrepreneurial failures. These ups and downs continued into the 90s of the previous millennium. Only since the takeover of a South African Distillers Group, which by the way could not be described as favourable, have things been steadily on the up. Unfortunately, this could not prevent some of the historic buildings from being used elsewhere in the meantime. The Tobermory distillery, which draws its water from the Mishnish Lochs, appeals especially to whiskey lovers who prefer slightly peaty to very peaty whiskeys. On average, the whiskeys available here have a slightly higher to significantly higher alcohol content than many of their competitors. If you are interested in a guided tour, we would recommend booking in advance, especially during the tourist season. More at turtlesurf eu.

Read moreTook part in the £40pp Warehouse tasting today. When you've done a few whisky tours and you are familiar with the core range offered by a distillery, I can't recommend enough upgrading to these type of experiences. Sadly it was not possible for the tour to take place in the warehouse, which we were informed was due to maintenace - though I notice it seems to be an ongoing issue. Regardless, Alasdair - a fantastic tour guide and a real credit to the distillery team - more than made up for this. We were taken on a short tour of production before heading into the tasting snug. While we couldnt see the whiskies drawn from the casks ourselves, these were all single cask bottlings. Alasdair spent an hour guiding us through the four drams, helping everyone regardless of experience level understand why the whiskies nosed and tasted the way they did before they were revealed. While I wont give any spoilers, you would easily pay £100 or more in the pub for the same offering. I highly recommend booking visiting and...
