Three of us visited here for lunch recently, 2 adults and one 9 year old child. We are not seafood fans and the menu was not to our liking, apart from steak and ale pie, which is what I chose. The meat was top quality and cooked to perfection and you could smell and taste the ale. Unfortunately the gravy had been so over salted that I could not eat the rest. The chips were good and, much as I like my veg al dente, the knife would not penetrate the asparagus or the green beans so I had to pick them up to bite into them. Apart from the nice puff pastry, chips and a few pieces of steak and veg I had to give up. The other order was for cheese sandwiches with a salad garnish. The kids menu was sadly lacking in choice so he chose a cheese sandwich. When the sandwiches arrived, the bread was thick as a doorstep and was seeded, not something a young child would like. There appeared to be no butter on the bread and the cheese was mozzarella rather than a nice cheddar. This made the sandwiches dry, apart from the adult one having an overpowering apple and something chutney type of thing on the top lid. Neither of them could eat it so it went back barely touched. At no point did anyone come to ask if the meal was OK but to be fair, they were very busy inside as well as out. When the server eventually came over we said we didn't want any more and I told her of the salty gravy and to just take it all away and could we have the bill. When she returned she said she'd taken the service charge off. £50 odds down the drain. She was about to ask if I wanted the steak pie taken off the bill but I said I'd just pay, because businesses are struggling enough, but we would not go back. Other people seemed to be enjoying their meals. A sandwich should have bread thin enough that you can taste the filling and the filling should have taste. It is not a suitable sandwich for kids. Very...
Read moreExcellent food. We celebrated our 50th anniversary with 11 family members. Holly took our drink orders and appetizers when we arrived and while we waited for the men. When they arrived they had their drink order taken but were not asked about appetizers. So when they ordered and asked for appetizers they had to have them come at the same time. We had to continually ask for water and were never asked about any further drinks. After we were done eating we had to wait at least 10 to 15 minutes to have them clear our dishes. We were not asked about desserts. As we got our bill we realized that we were charged the additional tip of 20 %. The kitchen staff definitely deserved the tip, as did the waiter who cleared the table and refilled our waters. However we were extremely disappointed with holly and she deserved nothing. We were so excited to have the night together at a fine dining establishment to celebrate a momentous occasion with our family and we all left extremely disappointed because Holly had not made any attempt to impress us and make our...
Read moreWe often visit here with my guests on our tours. It's a cool pub with decent food but it's suffering with recruitment both front and back of house I think.
The Ranch burger was fine. A very dry patty if I'm honest, a tiny bit of cheese & slice of bacon and decent mushroom sauce.
The coleslaw looked pretty naff although it tasted fine. Chips were good and the salad with dressing fine.
I asked for the dessert menu (fancied the chocolate orange mud pie) but dessert means the staff desert !! Must have been break time because they all disappeared.
I waited 20 minutes and saw no one outside where my guests and I sat. I had to get the 7.25pm ferry so needed to be away at 6.15pm and I gave up in the end. Had to go inside to ask for the bill and only one lady behind the bar.
Overall it's just not on point and for a venue well regarded it's a bit 3 star today. I'll try somewhere...
