Let me start my review by saying I do get its a very old building... But it's just so inaccessible! For any kind of disability it's just not accessible. The staff weren't great. I'm not sure if they are volunteers? But they didn't even say hello as we entered simply held up on hand, did the clicker to show how many people were there...that was it!! Not one member of staff voluntarily spoke to us?! Weird? My daughter had been dying to see the tunnel I'd recalled from childhood.. So did other people. Apparently it's a special booked tour only. Weds only, must be booked in advance. OK then. No tunnel for us. The little gift shop was tacky and awful. Way too little historical gifts or nicknacs. If I wanted tat I'd go to the fair! The view is pretty cool. It does seem to be a health and safety hazard pretty much every few steps at the top of the castle. One room inside seems to be a wedding venue advert. The guy doing some kind of talk while dressed up needs autism training. So..if you are there aren't disabled, don't have autistic kids and haven't got anything else to do then pop in for 15 mins. But don't plan a day's visit unless you've pre booked the tour.... Although I have no clue how...

Great place to visit. Free entry. Can get bust in peak season. There are pay and display car parks, again can get busy. By car: Take the M275 into Portsmouth, following signs for City Centre. Then take the A3, signposted for Seafront, before joining the A288 – Kings Terrace and Pier Road. Turn left on the Pier Road Roundabout onto Clarence Esplanade. Southsea Castle will be on your right in 0.6 miles. Parking is available at The D-Day Story car park. By train: Southsea Castle is 1.8 miles from both Fratton and Portsmouth and Southsea railway stations. Each route can be walked in around 35 minutes. By bus: The nearest bus stop to Southsea Castle is on Palmerston Road. It’s operated by First Bus on the 3 and 18 routes, and Stagecoach on the 23. These bus stops are a 0.5 mile walk from the castle, along Palmerston Road and...

Well maintained and presented location. Interesting history with will presented facts & information. Not a large castle and it won't take you long to go around the whole place. Well worth a visit off you're in the area and interested in the history of Portsmouth. Has a nice cafe/bar with great views over the entrance to Portsmouth harbour and the Isle of Wight (providing the weather is good). Best of all, it's free entry. So even if you go in, only spend a few minutes within place and learn one small fact, it's great value for money. Staff are helpful and friendly. You can also hire the location for certain events. Allow 30 mins to an hour to see absolutely everything. Whilst only a relatively small 'castle', it's design impacted on other castles built after it and it has close ties with the...

It was closed when we visited last December but you can walk around the fort and to the courtyard. Built by Henry VIII to defend against French and Holy Roman Empire in 16th century, then later played a role of fortification in world war I and II. Located in Portsmouth in the southern tip of British Isles. Access to courtyard via a bridge over the moat. Cobble stone throughout. Currently owned by the government and they are building a mall nearby for tourism. Cars can be parked in metered parking nearby or in residential area within 15-20 min. walk. Closed to coast, unpredictable weather so bring umbrellas, raincoats, etc. Not a whole lot to see in Portsmouth but if you want to go to stonehenge, it's an hour and half drive from Portsmouth and can be used as a side trip if you are interested in a bit of naval history.
