I recently visited Prohibition Cocktail Lounge and found it horrendously awful: the exterior looked like it was some sort of squat, with windows boarded up and black paint peeling off the wood. Once inside, after descending a steep rickety set of stairs leading into a dingy black basement (which could be seen as a metaphor for the cesspit in the bowels of Hell it actual is) and having not booked, it was explained to us that we needed to book a table, and a charge would be applied for each person sitting at the table. The charge it seems was for the music being set up, which we were not expecting but the musicians were very entertaining. There were only a few other couples in the entire place so why booking was an issue escapes me. The charge would have to be made in cash for some reason, and the drinks could be paid by card. The waiting staff were wearing casual clothes rather than in uniform and it was apparent they were most definitely far from “cocktail waitresses”. Our group was then presented with a cheap, sticky laminated drinks menu and was so dog eared, parts of it was hard to read in the dim lighting. I get they were trying to create an ambience; however, the reality is the atmosphere was more befitting of a dungeon of torture rather than a smoky jazz cocktail lounge. In their defence, the cocktails were actually good, but not deserving the £15 price tag. Our group tried several and the drinks were the only success in the whole “experience”. They do not have lager on tap; however, this was provided from a can (and charged at a phenomenally massive mark-up) luckily, we didnt require the lavatories so I can not comment on the cleanliness of them. In summary the prices are a touch on the high side, either drop the “booking fee”, or the drink prices instead of having cake and eating it. The room falls short of a swinging jazz speak easy`. This is a perfect example of a well-constructed all singing website to fool customers into visiting, and a poorly created...
Read moreWent to see rhythm of the nineties Jan 2023. First time I've been here despite living in Portsmouth. Band was good bar service was good prices not to bad. Toilets pretty standard for a Portsmouth pub. Atmosphere was nice with a wide variety of genres of people having a good time. Sounds system was good too. Main let down was the fact it's spread over two floors basement and ground. Stage and all 440 people trying to dance on the sweaty hot 1st floor with no (or not enough a/c) and ten people merrily drinking downstairs in the cold basement (there is a bar down there but it was understaffed) overall I enjoyed it but it could be improved by enlarging upstairs (remove the loos put more in downstairs) and reduce the size of the upstairs bar. Plus add more seating or a screen showing upstairs downstairs to encourage people in. Give the girl doing the cloakroom a torch (she was using her phone) As a kid I remember this venue being advertised as Harry Lyme's 5 venues in 1. Seemed to be still trying to do everything hence no great at any . Still had a good time though and...

Great venue, sound system is insane 😍 The search before entry is thorough which is good, and makes me feel a lot safe within the venue, The drinks prices are on the the more pricy side but still okay, bar service quick also 🍻
all staff are friendly and welcoming Great night all around and also the lighting is sick also and being a capacity of a sold out crowd of 500 the vibes were great and makes it more of an Intermet venue
Something to improve on is invest in some AC because it became like a sweat box and the toilet facilities need to be a bit bigger for the amount of people And the Han dryer needs to be fixed But these things just a few to improve on
and I can see this being the best venue in portsmouth by far🕺🕺 I’ll...
