Not one of your flashy trendy bars, much more an old-fashioned popular local pub with a log fire, historic atmosphere and a friendly welcome. It's been a pub since 1733!
No food except crisps and nuts, but there's always an interesting choice of beers, which change regularly, and with good fair prices. A wide variety of customers - just as popular with students, young people and tourists as with regular older locals. It's often busy but always well worth dropping in for a visit, to see if there's a seat.
The pub hosts regular evening music events - open mic nights etc, but the best is the Wednesday night gathering of traditional folk musicians playing nonstop music and song to 11pm in the old barrel vaulted room at the back. Be warned though! It's usually a busy packed out night.
All in all, this unassuming pub has a lot going for it. It may not be in the trendier town centre but its one of...
Read moreNice little pub in the middle of Stirling. We walked in and, as foreigners from the US, had no idea what was going on. Luckily some locals told us that they don't do table service in pubs in Scotland. The locals were VERY friendly. We engaged a couple folks in conversation for two hours. We originally intended to stop someplace to eat, but when we walked in, the experience was so authentic that we decided to stay for a couple hours. The owner offered to order us some take-away food in case we wanted to stay, but we were too distracted by the conversation with the locals. Definitely recommend for foreigners who would like a real Scottish pub experience. Locals were singing and laughing at the pub. It was amazing and exactly what we pictured a Scottish...
Read moreGreat local spot. I’m from the US and as long as you can handle a little friendly banter, this is one of the best pubs you can go to. It was very welcoming and fun to talk to the people working and drinking at the bar. The drinks are very well priced and it is dog friendly so I got my puppy fix in with a sweet dog named Blue.
I think as long as you are willing to joke around a bit you will fit right in but if you are up tight, this isn’t the place for you. If you’re American, think like a local pub in RI or Mass where everyone knows your name but everyone (lovingly) makes fun of each other. But add a Scottish accent. 10 out of 10 for an...
