I had the pleasure of visiting the Verdant Works Museum and it was truly a wonderful experience. One of the standout highlights for me was meeting Lily, a vibrant Dundee lady in her 80s who volunteered at the museum. Lily shared her firsthand experiences as a mill worker in Dundee from a young age, giving us a unique and personal insight into the industrial history of the city.

Lily's demonstration of the machines used in the mills was fascinating, as she operated them with skill and precision, walking us through the intricate process. Her stories of the changing landscape of industrial Dundee added depth and richness to our visit, making it a truly memorable experience.

In addition to Lily's invaluable contribution, the museum itself was very well put together. The exhibits were informative and engaging, offering a comprehensive look at the history of the textile industry in Dundee. Overall, the Verdant Works Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the industrial heritage of the city.

The focus of the Verdant Works Museum in Dundee is the textile industry. It showcases the history and heritage of the jute industry in Dundee, which played a significant role in the city's industrial development. The museum provides insights into the working conditions, machinery, and processes involved in jute production, as well as the impact of the industry on the...

Lovely place with a lot of history, explaining and showing the way the yute industry influenced the life in Scotland, from the need of whale oil to modern plastic and ecological impact. Very informed guides explaining the first part of the tour with the model office, letting us know the whole process of manufacturing, from the receiving and weighing of the yute bail to the final product.... during our visit there were a group of old ladies that work in the mill during their younger years and was very nice the input that they have during the tour having somebody pointing details if the manufacturing. Lots of well described displays and movies this place is a jewel and we recommend it highly.... parking is free with the ticket used at the Discovery Museum and the food in the cafe is great tasting with big portions, we took a break for eating before finishing our lovely visit to the museum... you will learn a lot about how society was affected by the yute industry... Kettlewarmers, underpaid women, population explosion, mill workers living in terrible sanitary conditions while the barons had mansions and not caring about their workers.... anyway enjoy and learn.. Did not seethe steam engine running, that could have been a great experience as well... sorry for not posting pics. But...

Amazing place. Great experience and very good job in representing how everything was at the time the place was open. Loved the work they have done to put everything in place. Good customer service and very good initiative to give the entrance for free to Dundonians.

Now though…. We decided to be part of the “quiz” they offer at the entrance, where you have to answers questions and, if you have them all right, you’ll be given a price. The game was quite fun and it makes you pay attention to everything around you, unfortunately, once we got to the till for the price, the lady didn’t know what to do. She didn’t check the answers and just gave my child a paper sticker. We weren’t expecting anything major, but surely something a little better than that. Found it quite unorganised and, tbh, my child was very upset about the prize she got.

I will be back and definitely recommend the place, but please get rid of the the game or erase the “getting a prize” part from it, if you then will look clueless or you guys aren’t going to get customers anything nice.

They would have gotten 5/5 stars if it wasn’t for...

Fantastic. Learn all about how jute is grown in India and why it then came to Dundee and became such an important industry. The Verdant Works was built in 1833 and by 1864 had 70 power looms and 2,800 spindles and was employing 500 workers involved in spinning and weaving jute. The industry employed 50,000 in the city at its peak. By 1889 though this mills time as a true textile works is over. The staff are friendly and helpful and it was lovely to see some of the machines working and be able to ask questions. See the architecture of the building from the viewing platforms and enjoy the different displays and the mighty 1801 steam beam engine. There's also a lovely cafe and gift shop though it would have been good to see some more jute made items. We got a combined ticket with Discovery which made it extra good value. Free parking next door for visitors.
