The lovely Ness Cove, is also known as the Smugglers beach, because of the Smugglers tunnel leading down to the cove. The Nesx is my favourite beach. My Jack Russell Terriers have had very many great times, sadly now too old to manage. Very sheltered often in the winter months, when on the main beach blustery but once round the corner to the Cove, feels completely sheltered. When low tide, great long big stretch of a beach, where you can spend time round the rocks, and can if very good at rock climbing, instead of using the Tunnel can climb the rocks back round to Shaldon, or from The Ness Lighthouse round to the Ness from Shaldon . Very slippery not as easy as it use to be and need to check on the tides! The Cove is like a hidden Island, away from the real world feeling. Near the Cove, is the very pleasant Ness Gift shop that also serves drinks snacks and ice creams looking over the pond, open during the holiday seasons, and also The Shaldon Wildlife Zoo. The Shaldon Golf Approach Course, and Cafe ODE are also close with car parking. The only problem is the challenge to negotiating the steps in the tunnel with push chairs, but well worth the effort. Dog friendly all the year round, and has a blue flag, for good...
Read moreNess Cove is a lovely secluded beach that is dog friendly all year round (I think). Today myself and my parents came down for a bbq which was very nice albeit a bit windy (plenty of sheltered spots under the cliffs though). We brought our pooch 🐶 with us who was happily chasing tennis balls that I threw in the sea for her. It does get busy here though, so if you’re having a bbq keep an eye on your dog. This beach is also unique because the only access to it is via a tunnel.
There are toilets by the tunnel entrance, the zoo is nearby and a large council car park across the road. Cafe ODE in the car park serves great coffee and chips 😋.
The car park and beach however are not wheelchair or pushchair friendly. The car park is built on a hill so has a steep incline, the toilet block has no disabled loo and the tunnel has stairs in it but no lift or ramp, and this is the only way of getting to the beach.
Overall well worth a visit but only if you’re able bodied and don’t...
Read moreone of the best beaches around. amazing walk to get here and such a beautiful view of the cliffs above once you exit the tunnel. nice and hidden from most tourists so usually not crazy busy. be warned though, if you go out or come back in during high tide, there are sharp rocks that you won't be able to see. take it easy, go at low tide, or wear beach / water shoes and you will be just fine. sand is beautiful, nice shady spots under the cliffs. can get rough due to being so open out to sea, but definitely a fun place to play in the waves and splash around during calmer times. definitely recommend checking out,...
