It is with utmost regret I write this as I am thoroughly supportive of independent small pop ups especially in the hospitality industry as many have succumb to covid bankruptcy or vast horrific chain takeovers..however! I stopped for quick toilet visit in Teignmouth after a lengthy diversion because of an incident at Telegraph Hill. On leaving the amenities I smelt the irresistible fragrance of soy and garlic in the air and quickly spotting the Thai hut established this was the culprit. Although I had my own food with me I thought I'd treat myself. After an unresponsive wait, I asked polite "are you still open" to which the lady replied after a lengthy pause "Ummmmm" followed by the gentleman saying "yes" it was roughly 8pm. I immediately felt awkward as I sincerely got the impression she'd had enough. Feeling this i said optimisticly " ill have whatever you want to cook for me" allowing an opportunity to quickly conjure up something tasty without effort in true Thai style. I was then asked loads of questions about preferences to noodles, rice, hot, spicy..kind of defeating the object of my proposal. Ultimately after 30mims wait I was given green chicken curry with NOODLES, yes I'd said noodles as a preference but obviously not to be paired with traditionally watery green curry. I'd also asked about a fork before ordering as I wanted to eat it where I was by the sea. After opening the lid already disappointed by what I'd been told I had, the noodles were old, stale, overcooked and short like tinned spaghetti but with the consistency of mashed potato. The chicken had the consistency of soya proteins like those found in a pot noodle when they used to include it, the carrots cut round not battoned and frozen cauliflower, peas and grey once green beans with an over powering taste of palm sugar, far too sweet. I only had 1 kind of mouthful as it was impossible noodles and watery curry instead of rice thus ruining my planned alfresco food. I went home to eat 'some' of it. I must also say I'm a passionate food advocate, Head chef of over 25 years and have spent significant years in Thailand travelling North to south. The first dirty Pad Thai I had on arrival in Bankok for 59p was way tastier, fresher and authentic than the sheer mulch I was served this evening. Perhaps had I mentioned my trade and not given them the easy opportunity to 'suprise' I may have had a better experience. I shouldn't need to announce I'm far from an idiot tourist. My guests and customers are served the best I can produce for them regardless of time, gender, royalty, sexual orientation..if you don't want to cook...
Read moreThis little place opposite the Lifeboat Station is amazing. Was recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. Our Green Curry and Pad Thai was made in front of us with fresh ingredients, the lady who works there was super friendly and considerately asked how spicy we wanted it and was a great to talk to. Nothing was too much of trouble for her. The food itself was fantastic! Green Curry was aromatic and creamy, generous portion, good balance of veg/meat/rice, Pad Thai was cooked with delicate noodles also generous portion and lots of flavour. We went to many Thai restaurants in our time, some very expensive, but this place would definitely beat them all by quality, value and service. Thumbs up and we will definitely be back when we’re next in Teignmouth! Hope there was something like it...
Read moreWe had visitors so decided to give Nik Nak Noodles a try after seeing the good reviews.
It was excellent and did not disappoint! We each tried something different, the thai curry, stir fry and chicken noodles and we all enjoyed it and said how tasty and fresh the meal was. Lots of chicken and a very satisfying portion of food.
The brother in law said he'd be a regular if only he lived closer as it was "bloody gorgeous" .... So highly recommend...
