I will start by saying that the food was excellent BUT I was somewhat surprised to find myself drinking wine from plastic a container. I know you said it's not plastic but it looks like plastic and it feels like plastic. And I was not expecting to be eating a £16 venison steak from the depths of a cardboard box. I was expecting evening café/bistro dining with the usual accoutrement. A burger in a box - maybe but a steak? I had booked after reviewing your website but maybe I should have read further than the "Home" page. Actually nowhere does it mention eating from cardboard boxes. Even the home page shows wooden platters with food that we ate from boxes. I'm sure that if you go to this café with the knowledge that the food comes in cardboard boxes or plastic pots (I know they are not plastic but...) all eaten with plastic cutlery (I know it's not plastic but...) then the experience will be wonderful but I didn't and it wasn't. Perhaps I'm too old to be an eco-warrior. Talking of which some of our fellow eco-diners arrived in their huge gas guzzlers and maybe needed to offset some of their carbon...
Read moreExceptional restaurant and we go out of our way to visit whenever we are on holiday in Devon. This restaurant has won numerous awards for sustainability and source all their food locally from farmers who adhere to high standards of animal welfare. They recycle everything, generate their own electricity, and the food is GORGEOUS, the staff are friendly and chatty, and it's a great little family restaurant. We were impressed because we have 3 coeliacs in the family and there were alot of gluten free options including cakes. This is a lovely family restaurant (incl. dogs) and is right on the edge of the car park overlooking the beach. Ness (smugglers) Cove is a lovely beach and just a couple minutes' walk away, as is the Shaldon Zoo tucked away...
Read moreOK location is different it's opposite a car park but it strangely tranquil, view of the town & estuary are OK if you like that sort of thing.
Food isn't that great, chips are over salty, child's children Mac and cheese was awful and quite small for an 11-14 year old. Burger was good but chips ruined the meal think Mcdonalds on steroids. Scones also were hard a bit over cooked which was a shame.
Worst of all was the hot chocolate someone in our family loves hot chocolate but couldn't drink it despite the other reviews it was horrible with a metallic taste. 😯
So location and cost was OK but the food as a whole wasn't that good.
Hope you enjoy better than we did as it cost £40 but no one really...
