This lake is beautiful and I have enjoyed coming to it for my birthday (July 4th) and hot summer days for about 5 years now. I have noticed that the police presence has been slowly increasing during this time and today I was met with a horrifying experience. A (white) police officer approached my stepdad and friend (both of which are Black) while they were packing up the car to leave. He said that vaping was illegal in that area now and that he’d have to see my friend’s ID. We initially thought this was because he wanted to at least verify the age of my friend but he ended up taking it a step further and calling in the license number to check my friend for warrants. I was not present during the initial interaction but as soon as I saw a police officer near my Black loved ones I sprung into action. I feared that this small interaction would turn into one that my friend could lose his life over. As soon as I questioned the police officers actions I was met with attitude and a second police officer coming up. When my friend’s record came back clear (yes, vaping while Black = possible criminal) they both walked away but the damage was done. I was lucky enough to have been present when this happened and I lament that had my white family and friends not crowded around in support to make sure nothing violent happened to my stepdad and friend, that this would have ended much differently. I smelled hypocrisy immediately about this new smoking policy considered I saw MULTIPLE white adults smoking cigarettes IN the lake while my siblings and I were swimming. It was clear that they were only clocking certain people for breaking the rules. If you are a person of color and want to go to this lake please proceed...
Read moreDO NOT GO HERE! First, we tried to park and the lot was “full.” We were directed to park in a dentist’s office parking lot instead. We parked, then walked over a mile, only to get to the beach where there were easily 50 open parking spots. Settle in with our kids (all teenage boys) and some other families for about 45 mins. All of us parents were sitting at the beach when we were approached by an employee, traveling by gator/utility vehicle. First, he sat about 30 feet from us and stared. This went on for a solid 5 minutes before he pulled away. It was a little creepy. Then, he angrily approached our boys and said he was calling the police if we didn’t leave. We had no idea what he was talking about, so finally he said that they had been jumping off the dock. Admittedly, he sat and watched our kids, along with at least 15-20 other kids (not part of our group), jump off a dock into the lake. We told him that we were from out of state and had never been there before. He just kept repeating that he kicked us out and he was calling the police on us. He also implied that our kids were illiterate and couldn’t speak English because they said they didn’t see any signs prohibiting jumping from the dock. Obviously, we left- staying at a mediocre “beach” was not worth having him call and waste the time of the local PD. Chuck, if you’re reading this, I hope you feel like a big and powerful man after exercising your “power” that you clearly lack in every other facet...
