This is a place of racism. Racist. Racist.
Years ago, a cashier, named Umang, told me very coldly, what he thought my race was. Ironically this person was a person of color from another country.
Another employee, named Faith, (not a person of color) after some friendly chats described me by my race to my face.
When I later confronted her she denied it.
Yet another Salvation Army manager (young, slightly hipsterish) described one employee as 100% Thai. And one time a Salvation Army employee (completely hipsterish) yelled about a third employee, "He's Chinese!!!!
But it is not just the employees that are like this. But, customers.
Someone in Ann Arbor asked me for years if I was sure I was not a certain race. I saw him again but this time at this Salvation Army. He asked me AGAIN if I was not a certain race. I told him that I did not like that question and did not like questions about my race. He then asked, "What race are you?"
A woman wearing a hijab in 2017 was told by a customer to go back where she came from-in front of the whole store.
I had not come back to this store in years. That is, until yesterday when two minority customers asked me if I was a certain race. They spoke in a mocking manner. They seemed to want to label me. People don't need labels. If you don't care about what type of White someone is (German, French)..what does it matter what type of person of color someone is??
Why does not store train their employees better? Why don't they have signs...
Read moreHuge store, pretty well organized, but the jewelry (my primary purchases) has gotten out of control in the past 6 months. Not only is the pricing totally out of line, the way it’s displayed on hangers waaaay behind the counter makes it impossible to see what is there. Staff doesn’t want to take the hangers down, so they grab three or four of whatever is in front and lay it out in front of you.
Today I asked to see a piece of costume jewelry out of the case. It was a gold tone metal key on a chain necklace, probably about 10 years old. When the employee got it out and I looked at it, the key pendant was bent and about a third of the gold paint had cracked off (and not in a pretty way). It had a price tag of $10. I’m willing to bet it wasn’t even $8 when new - it was on par with Target or Meijer quality.
All of the jewelry has become grossly overpriced, which is why they have about 60% more jewelry than they could ever hope to sell. Of course, people have to be able to actually SEE the products in order to buy them, so there’s that too.
I’ve mentioned these issues each of the last four times I’ve been in and the staff...
Read moreawful awful woman working there today. my group attended this salvation army around 4:30pm today, May 27th. At approximately 4:50pm, while browsing, I reached out to touch a dress on a lone rack in the middle of the store to quickly examine the pattern of it. I was unaware there was a rude, disheveled looking woman lurking behind the rack. She quickly and loudly snapped at me, “This rack is unavailable!” I nearly jumped out of my skin as I did not know there was someone watching me glance at an item on a rack in the store. I stated to her “I’m just looking, relax,” and began to briskly walk towards the exit (i will never been returning to this salvation again). One of my group members questioned to me “It’s unavailable?” The woman must have thought they were talking to her because she responded with “Yes, it’s unavailable!” in an incredibly snarky and disrespectful tone. Overall the experience was uncomfortable and by far the rudest thing I have had happen to me at a thrift store. this place needs to background check its employees. this woman was very obviously on some sort...
