Don't send your child here without supervision if they are new to rock climbing. There are no safety protocols in their kids summer camp and they do not have enough staff to watch all the kids.
My 10 year old daughter was at Wall Crawler Rock Club for summer camp during the week of July 26, 2021. She was new to rock climbing and was climbing one of the walls using auto belay. She forgot to buckle her harness into the auto belay and just let go from 15 feet. She fell and hurt her spine.
Six months on and after several physiotherapy sessions she still has occasional back pain.
Talking to her I realize there were no safety protocols in place. The kids were not required to wait for someone to come and check them before they start climbing and they were allowed to climb alone with nobody watching them. To respond to the post by the owner, I think he just re-iterates my point. Climbing is dangerous, so don't send a new climber there unsurpervised. It was my 10 year old's 3rd day climbing. She is a rule follower and she still got hurt because she forgot to buckle into the auto belay, and no adult was there to correct her mistake. That wall went all the way to 25 ft. and the owner is right, she could have got...
Read moreI came to spend a couple hours bouldering with my partner past weekend. $18 pp for a day pass, $6 for shoes, $5 for a bag of chalk to rent (which is really steep and the employee kept giving us an empty bag/ chalk sock with no chalk inside. We had to ask for more chalk 4 times and show an empty inside to finally get a somewhat usable chalk bag).
Establishment itself is a small climbing gym with a boulder cave, some auto belays and some top rope systems. It also has a small gym area for warming up with some equipments like hangboards, pull up bars, and boxes. There is also a moonboard in the corner.
The vibes suggested that it might be a more suitable gym for children. There were a few kids running (fully doing laps) around, which in my mind is a hazard. I saw maybe 5-6 adults climbing in the span of 2 hours.
Boulder courses were interesting. It uses a V scale but most routes don’t have a clear start/end markings or grades. There’s some “natural” elements to the wall like little crevices and jugs so that was fun to utilize. It would be nice to have more routes in v1-2 because my beginner husband didn’t have a...
Read moreI've been climbing here, with a membership, for over two years. I climb at other gyms in Atlanta as well, so I would argue that I have a relatively unbiased perspective.
Wall crawlers is a good gym. The bouldering here is very difficult and technical; arguably the most realistic when comparing to outdoor climbing. The rope climbing is the best in the area and what makes the gym stand out. 4 Auto-belays make for a great rope climbing experience, even if you are climbing solo. Additionally there are a fair bit of routes for belaying with a partner.
The gym also has a workout area with weights. Though the selection isn't up to date, it's a nice add, and used often.
If you visit on a weekday you will find privacy, in a friendly atmosphere, without many distractions. Weekends will be slightly more socially overwhelming.
I think wall crawlers does its best with what it has. Routes could be reset more often, and the facility could be more up-to-date. However, there is always a new challenge on the wall, and a difficult problem to session until the next...
