"Well at this point the U.S election seems ripe for another candidate and why not vote for Willie?! He seems as reasonable as many of the others… Austin Texas’ men’s clothing store STAG thought the same and came to me with an amazing proposal, I would once again get to draw Willie Nelson (see 2015’s La Zona Rosa mural) for yet another Austin wall which would again be painted by the talented Joe Swec. This time I’d also get to collaborate with amazing designer Erick Montes too. SOLD! STAG‘s Forrest Bloede and Don Weir sent me a pile of great Willie reference pictures and this time I was inspired by the 1980s marathon-running Willie. He wore some pretty amazing shorts back then but sadly they couldn’t fit into the composition. My illustration was scanned and sent to Austin where Erick Montes designed the fabulously bold type and red stripes. The image was then projected onto the wall for Joe Swec and co. to paint. I typically find myself in the area when working, had no idea it was a historical landmark, just enjoyed the art! But if in the area, a few decent food trucks, and home slice is there as well! Totally worth a trip if you are hungry as the food in the area is worth the stop...
