Wilderness Run Adventure Course — Attraction in Banner Elk

The course is nice but staff was pretty unprofessional. The office staff was confused and unclear about participant requirements and gave us the choice of whether we wanted to allow our 6 yr old on the large course even though he didn’t meet weight requirements. We ultimately chose for him to do child’s package, thank goodness. He enjoyed that. But my 7 yr old and 9 yr old did the large course with me and my 15 yr old which was very difficult. They were too short and afraid to do the clipping/unclipping themselves, and it was so tedious to assist a child through the course. That’s on us, but I do feel like if they had demonstrated the procedure (and show us how high we would need to reach) before we paid and geared up, we would’ve realized this was not a great choice for our family. Finally- circling back to lack of professionalism- the gentleman providing instructions was pretty rude to my 9 yr old. He rushed through the instructions rather quickly and when she struggled to remember the process he snapped at her several times (“I JUST told you! How did you already forget!) and when I tried to help teach her myself he stopped me and made it very uncomfortable for her as she struggled in front of the group. I think this really put her in a negative headspace going into the course. My advice for improvement would be to have demonstrations before payment for families who are unsure, like we were. I had to interrupt my climb because of lightning in the vicinity. They gave me a raincheck, I waited out the rain at the nearby hot pie cafe, came back and finished the course. When I was out on the course, I initially felt intimidated being so high up on narrow logs with no safety nets. Starting at the lowest level I became acclimated to the challenging environment and was able to gain confidence to eventually reach the highest level. Spent about 90 minutes total on the course. I appreciated the safety instructions and guidance from the staff. The double carabiner clips on the body harness guarantee that you are always attached to a guide wire or safety line. I gave a 3 star rating due to the video of my ride NOT BEING AVAILABLE. The cashier yelled out videos are not guaranteed as she swipe our card. I was visiting from Cleveland Ohio, I have no copy of this memory and the phones are not allowed out during the ride due to risk of damage/lost. A lot of customers were very disappointed when their video was not available. But what could we do but wish and continue to try. Only one staff member showed remorse the cashier just kept repeating I told you that the video is not guaranteed.
