I visited Sojourner Truth’s Monument since I have been doing research on her and wanting to share her story. Sojourner Truth was a remarkable human being. Born in Ulster County NY in 1797 by the name of Isabella Bomfree. Born of enslaved parents James and Elizabeth mean Isabella would be enslaved as well. Slavery in New York did not officially end until 1827. One of the first memories Sojourner could recall was at the age of 9. She was sold at auction with a flock of sheep for around $100. This because the starting point for bad things in her life. The man who bought her at auction was a very violent man. But she did not let this hold her down. Sojourner Truth had five children. One of the name Peter who was illegally sold into slavery. Sojourner filed suit against the man and won. She became the first African American woman to win a case against a white man.
