Complete disagreement with the below reviews. We've missed Pecan Street festival maybe once in 20 years, and this year's was by far the best. The old model was absurd-- you had to walk a quarter mile down the street and then turn around and walk back to see all the vendors (!) This year's version was logical--vendors face each other. The vendors generally also seemed a step up from the retreads on 6th. But what really shined was the music, and we are pretty much aficionados. I can't think of one worthwhile band ever on sixth--anyway they're all pushed off to some side street. But Jennifer Foster and her band on Saturday were brilliant. An actual old-school type singer with a hellava voice who knows not to include her pracice scales in her songs. We watched the rocking band that followed from the outdoor bar behind the stage, something 6th totally lacks. We happened on a solo slide- blues guitarist playing Robert Johnson style--damn impressive. Not that much redeemable in today's music, but this festival sure found some gems for us. Plus we bought a painting from an incredible artist. One...
Read morePecan Street has been going on for decades in Austin and has moved venues from sixth Street in downtown to the Hill Country Galleria. It does not have the same feel as it did when it was downtown, and it just has a more generic commercial vibe and feels more suburban. The old Pecan Street festivals used to feel like they were dominated by local artists, and a mix of hippies and other weird Austinites. The food offerings at the downtown venue were much better and more interesting. This is true both the local restaurants that line the venue, and the restaurants that bought space to sell their foods. The fact that it takes more than half an hour to get here from downtown is not a great thing for most people, and I feel like this should be a separate festival because it really is nothing like the original Pecan Street festival. In the future, I don’t know if I will go back here unless I happen to be in the neighborhood anyway, for some...
