I have just had the worst experience in my life at a coffee shop. In short: “Moms, DON’T TAKE YOUR KIDS HERE.” NOT KIDS FRIENDLY; NOT Asian friendly ? No service; Orders are often slow and misplaced; Often run out of water cups; The owner is super rude and entitled.
First, I am a regular customer, going there once every week or every other week((Well not many choices in the neighborhood), which means she should know my face already. It’s a piece of important detail for later. Occasionally I would take my daughter with me to see friends or play date snacks. On 9/18 Sun, The staff forgot my friend’s order. ( to be honest, this place is decently short-staffed. 2 staff were doing everything. Taking orders, being the barista, cleaning, apparently a lot of other chores. BIG THANKS to them ). They were swamped. The Starbucks at Barn&noble and the newly opened Summermoon on 71 normally will have 4 staff with 1/2 of Runaway’s capacity. )
Then we waited there for our table to be cleaned, which nobody did after a while. I cleaned up myself eventually…. The moment I split my beignet, I found that’s not the one I ordered. And no water cups…. When my friend’s 3 years old daughter touched the hat displayed there, the owner lady said very strongly” PUT IT BACK”. Who with their right mind would talk to a 3-year-old customer’s kid like that??? Shortly after, she went straight to our kids saying VERY rudely and loudly “Don't move around, you need to sit on the chairs” without any hesitation or any explanations. My daughter said sorry right away. She isn’t completely wrong, the kids weren’t sitting still all the time. There are hot drinks which could be a hazard and other customers deserve to enjoy their time as well. Although it doesn’t give her the right to be rude and disrespectful to the little customers. We always order drinks and food for the kids as well. I talked to my daughter immediately after. Then the big moment came. My daughter was entertaining her 3 years old friend while my friend went to reorder her missed order. The owner came straight to my table and pretty much started to lecture me about how our kids should behave, with a very angry and serious tone. Of course, it’s not because she cares about the kids, she even said to herself that she would be liable if anything happened. While she said all of this, No please, no smile, no sugar coding anything. I wish I have recorded the whole thing. The most ridiculous service I have ever received. What made her think she is entitled enough to lecture a customer? Or is it because we are ASIAN? Does she think we should behave a certain way? Or she could just snap at me and our kids? Would she do the same thing to other races? The big question mark here. The whole thing made my daughter so sad and traumatized. She loved this cafe very much. I had to be fair, this place has a good vibe, coffee is fairly good, but not good enough for me to tolerate the rest. Good luck to the owner, the business isn’t gonna go far without respecting others or being customer-centric. It’s a “SAYONARA”, we will never come...
Read moreMy wife and I were looking for an authentic coffee shop before watching a movie so we scrolled through Google reviews and discovered a "WFM Cafe..." which we discovered was the Whole Foods. This was NOT what we were looking for, especially with the lousy and rude service therein, so we searched again in Google reviews which directed us to nearby Runaway Luna.
I say "directed" because we could only guess as to - where - this establishment is located among the yoga studios and jewelry stores because of the lack of proper signage. We finally followed a pair of mid-twenties yuppies in yoga pants who had the determined stride of someone who needs coffee.
Entering, we were met with a blast of classic Soul/R&B and an ocular assault of tschotschkes and knick-knacks with a pleasant amount of costumers for early Friday morning.
The manager/owner, overdressed in an outfit replete with giant flat-brimmed hat in what my wife termed "hill country California," pleasantly and professionally greeted customers over the loud music.
We got in line and waited while the cashier chatted with the customers ahead of us, which by the length of the conversation, I assumed she personally knew them.
No matter.
When we arrived my wife and I were very pleasantly and professionally greeted and assisted as she guided us in selecting our coffee and pastries. In fact, after she informed us she had baked a few items herself - we felt inspired to purchase more.
We comfortably sat near the window, in a pleasant atmosphere of clients in conversation and people enjoying their day. The cashier soon smilingly brought us our pastry order, soon followed by my cappuccino and what my wife very respectfully referred to as a "cortado," in ceramic cups - AS REQUESTED. I emphasize the ceramic cups because as of late, many coffee shops do not offer this option, and I believe coffee and its derivatives are best enjoyed in such. Further, although my wife ordered a latte, she said hers was the best "cortado" she has had outside of Spain.
My wife and I then settled into enjoying our coffees and pastries in almost perfection with the exception of the suggestions for improvement below:
Other than this - a perfect coffee...
Read moreI NEVER write reviews but feel compelled to respond to one of the reviews that obviously has zero clue about running a small business, and therefore how to truly support "family owned" and "local".
Runaway Luna is a shining example in our community of hard working, positive, honest, small and family owned! I am SO happy they are trying to weather a move that could have put most businesses under.
They created SUCH a warm and welcoming place, where everyone is treated respectfully and with a "we are in this together" attitude. In my opinion, how dare a commenter not have the respect for small business that they claim, but instead to leave a snippy review to try and hurt them? Please look at ALL the other reviews of people LOVING this little haven of togetherness!!! AND best coffee I have ever tasted, btw!
Perhaps a small business lesson is the best reply to that review's nonsense.
The LIFEBLOOD of a very small independent coffee shop is FOOT TRAFFIC. If neighboring businesses' employees are parking all along the street where Luna is located for 6-8 hours during the day... Luna revenues will suffer greatly. In addition, Luna needs to turn their tables over (much like a restaurant) in order to pay their fixed costs alone!! Please don't believe that a business that had to shut down for a week (lost revenue) and refit a space (out of pocket expense) doesn't NEED to look at how much they can sell per day in order to STAY OPEN. I am sorry if that makes someone upset, but that person likely has never had to lay awake worrying about paying a staff, or the rent on a space, due to lack of ability to have parking or seating turnover. Sorry for the reality check, but businesses need to make money!
As a person who has small business experience, I respectfully enter Runaway Luna expecting to exchange my dollars for the amazing coffee/food and leisurely experience, and then after I have savored, I (again, respectfully) give up my seat OR order more! And tip heavily the friendliest staff on the planet as I go...
Thankfully, I KNOW that the cowardly reviewer will not be missed by the FANTASTIC COMMUNITY that I have met there, who "get it" and who regularly come together to SUPPORT Runaway Luna in every way they can!
And how about we humans talk to each other if we have an issue instead of running to the internet to try to hurt a...
