Beautiful grounds, with expansive gardens and an arboretum, all of which border on the Delaware river. Unfortunately, the tour staff do not match the welcoming beauty of the property.
We encountered two employees here. The man seated at the big house was rude and unwelcoming. He offered no information and basically grunted when we asked where the bathrooms were located.
The tour guide was curt and cold. Her tour felt scripted and she did not have answers for many of the questions asked by the guests on the tour, repeatedly deferring to “that’s not on the inventory, so I don’t know.”
She admonished the guests several times on the tour so that we felt like we were walking on eggshells. She wouldn’t even let anyone leave to use the restroom, stating “we all exit together!” I understand the security concerns, but if people have to leave, let them. Maybe have another staff member to escort people out. Sounds like there is money to do so…
I’ve been to estates like this around the world and have never encountered such a self serious and harsh tour. Teaching history should be fun, passionate and welcoming. You won’t find any of these characteristics on the tour. The house itself is just ok; it’s a bit run down, and aside from some interesting paintings and WWI relics inside, isn’t worth viewing unless you really crave some wealth worship. A self guided tour with staff supervision would be more valuable imo.
Go for the beautiful grounds outside, but don’t expect any helpful or welcoming info from the employees. Grab a map and expect to do your own research prior to arriving. 5 stars for the grounds crew, who keep the...
Read moreMe, my family and friends would NOT recommend spending money for this tour!. Basically unkept property. Geese poo everywhere!. The "Big House" was deplorable!. For a "Biddle Property"-disgusting!. The flower buckets up front were disgusting (Someone could go to the dollar store and buy baskets that were better than the ones on the porch!). No one around to explain anything about this property and while we were touring there were only Spanish speaking staff that advised us they do not speak English!. Then towards the end we decided to watch a video-and one of the grounds keepers told us they were closing and for us to leave!. Believe me if you want to tour a mansion or see a much better, cleaner event-Go to Glenn Foerd Mansion. The treatment there is...
Read moreWent to explore the grounds earlier this week and as I started walking this little old lady started running after me and shouting at me through the trees! I had to do everything in my power not to fall to the floor laughing at the sight of her! She had this condescending tone in her voice "informing" me I had to sign in and buy a ticket. From earlier reviews I thought the grounds were open to the public and didn't realize this! I apologized and ended up driving 5 minutes down the road to Glen Foerd historic estate (free and open to the public). I could see her in my rearview mirror watching me the whole way out. Mostly a good laugh but a bit odd and uncomfortable as well - don't think I'll...
