Fixed an old high end nakamichi tape deck i thought was a lost cause, and not only that he let me stand right there while he did it. This gives the customer confidence in his work, like a chef preparing your meal in sight at a nicer restaurant. Makes sense as he's been doing this since 1975. This also makes turnaround lightning quick. Some other (usually larger) places make you drop it off and pick it up 3 weeks later after doing god knows what with it. He also pointed out potential problems that I can fix on my own or he can later if I desire. At the end he only charged me an hours labor, which seemed perfectly reasonable to me after seeing what needed to be done with the deck. I'm listening to an album that hasnt been heard in probably 20 years thanks to him, also doing so based on his advice to make sure everything's good to go. Hey, i dont mind an excuse to listen to good music.

When my Toshiba VCR/DVD player/recorder failed to load VHS tapes I wanted to get it fixed because replacement of this discontinued unit was very expensive. I opted to take the unit to Art's. Fully expecting to have to wait several days before finding out if it could be fixed and when. I was pleasantly surprised when Art put the unit on his bench, popped the cover and immediately began to work on it. After a few minutes and a successful VHS playback test my machine was fixed. To my added amazement the cost was reasonable for such quick service. In my long career in broadcast engineering I had the pleasure of working with a few tech-wizards who were not afraid to pop the cover and dig into a project and render a repair without hesitation. I can't thank Art enough. My dad recently passed away and left me hundreds of Beta and VHS tapes. I have a functioning VCR, but our Beta deck hadn't been used in decades, and all of the rubber belts and such had dried out and gotten stuff.

Art was able to repair the machine while I waited -- in fact, it took him longer to find the replacement belts than it took to exact the repairs -- but he had everything on hand.

I also enjoyed chatting with him, as I began my career in local TV news, and we were able to share some notes on that front.
