It's a tall order to review the 3-mile, 64-acre Charles River Esplanade. There are interconnected dirt and paved paths for walking, running and biking along the whole length. There are several docks for sunbathing, fishing and actual docking, if you own a boat. There are acres of grass and ample shade for picnicking, lounging or just running around. I've seen lots of portable hammocks strung between the trees. Ducks, geese and swans frequent the river and the lagoons between the paths. Footbridges span the water at strategic locations. You can learn to sail at Community Boating, take some swings at one of the ball fields or tennis courts, hear frequent music at the Hatch Shell or join one of the myriad other planned and spontaneous activities. The Esplanade is dog heaven. Kids will love the wading pool and several top-notch playgrounds. If you head west, past the Mass Ave Bridge, you'll run into a couple of exercise stations, which I can vouch give you a decent workout. There are some downsides: it's not safe after dark, there is no parking and only a couple of restrooms and just a few water fountains, so plan accordingly. I almost forgot to mention the view. Historic Back Bay is on one side and you're never out of sight of the wonderful ecosystem of the Charles. This is a true natural resource and doesn't cost anything but your (having a good) time. Everyone will...
Read moreIf you are thinking about visiting the Charles River Esplanade and you are reading this, GO!
Here’s why:
This is the perfect place for a first date, or a 100th date. I saw people sitting on benches holding each other and others having picturesque picnics. (Seriously with the basket and blanket and everything). Other activities include running, taking work calls, reading books, kids playing in the playground, and relaxing by the water. (Look at my photos to see what I’m talking about).
If you are on a leisurely walk it’s extremely relaxing. Something about walking along the water and watching life happen in so many different directions is humbling. This part of the city separates you from the city and you feel as though you are a 3rd person observer to it all. It forces you to slow down and be present. The docks and benches invite you to stop and watch a sailboat or the patterns in the water.
There are multiple access points to get onto the trail. I recommend parking close to one of the many bridge and walking to an access point. You can easily find them on google maps. I can add a marked up screenshot in my review.
It’s worth going. If you are thinking about it this is your sign. Just do it.
