Boston Food Guide: Must-Try Local Eats & Hidden Gems

As soon as you open the door the subtle sweet smell welcomes you. There are chocolates, bars, cocoa powders, pastries, and hot drinks as well. There is even a gift station. I am excited to go back and get cocoa powder to bake with. They even had specialty honey. I decided to get a hot chocolate. They have 3 standbys of Dark, Milk, and White. Each month they highlight a chocolate from a different place. This month is Peru. The light is slightly dimmed to provide a more intimate atmosphere in the seating area, but it was slightly brighter in the ordering area. I got a Milk Hot Chocolate. It was smooth, rich, and slightly thick. It coated my mouth in the rich flavor. Not overly sweet, yet sweet enough. On a cold day, it was warming to my soul, and a great treat. I though with it being made with a milk alternative instead (I requested it) that it might lose some of the richness. Not in the slightest. I had to stop walking when I took my order to go so I could savor it. It was that good. I can only imagine what the rest of the menu must taste like, with this luxurious introduction of flavor. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was it is a bit pricey. I however will say it is worth it. The best hot chocolate I have ever had in my life, and I am a chocolate lover. Try it out.

Went in on a Friday afternoon around 11:30-12:00 and the place looked busy, they had a bunch of tables to the left when you walked in the door. The tables were mostly filled up. They serve coffee and other drinks. Plus chocolate cake slices and of course chocolate candy’s. A very nice setting, clean, well kept. Cute little place. It’s bigger inside than it looks outside. I purchased a slice of chocolate mousse cake, a hot chocolate, cookie, and one chocolate truffle. Which was wrapped up in a little box with a bow for just about five dollars for the one piece of chocolate. So a bit on the pricey side. But the hot chocolate was so delicious like amazingly delicious!!!!!!! They also served you if you ordered to sit in there as opposed to to go. They give you a number sign for the table and bring out your order to you, very nice service.

To be quite honest I could file a complaint with this store. The staff’s verbal aggression and snide remarks towards us almost felt racially charged as they spoke to no one else in the store the way they did to us. As a matter of fact, they quickly changed their tone toward the customers next to us. It was a cold and snowy evening and we had decided to grab a quick cup of hot chocolate before heading back to our car. After purchasing we realized all the seats were occupied and decided to take a few sips of our chocolate huddled near their chocolate counter near the door for a few mins just before gearing up and getting ready to brace ourselves for the cold. On one occasion an employee went up to my mother and told her to move from behind the counter (she was on the edge and just out of the way of the door). We found that odd, especially the tone, but complied. No problem. Understood. Another, and an incessantly rude employee told us to remove our cups from their counter. We said okay? Sure. She then appears behind the counter as if standing guard. Prior to this no employee had been there for the entire 10mins since we entered the store. A customer approaches to cash out some chocolates and I move a little to give space so as to not be in the way. She makes a snide comment saying she needs space to carry out ‘the actual purpose of the counter’. Okay? (We are at this point just trying to leave the store, zip up our coats etc. because it became uncomfortable). My boyfriend’s mother then realizes how incredibly rude she had been and made a suggestion that maybe a sign on the counter would absolve any future issues since she had been giving us a hard time. The employee responds ‘ I think it’s pretty obvious what the counter is for’. At this point we have had it and she then tells us we can leave. Upon leaving she continues to make remarks and I’m halfway out the door but turn around to speak to the manager because I felt it shouldn’t go unchecked. While my mom held the door open she proceeds to tell her to close the door. After speaking to the manager and upon finally leaving she felt the need to yet again condescendingly wish us a ‘good weekend!’ This is crazy, weird and uncomfortable and I don’t think anyone should have been treated the way we were. After understanding her position and also obliging there was no need for the continuous insolent comments. For specific reference this experience is dated January 16, 2023 at around 7:30pm The employee in question is a small build, light colored, short, curly/wavy...

I am a very big fan of all their products. But I have always seen a confusion, crisis and lack of energy at their service end, even when they are not crowded. They seem overwhelmed, why?! Do you not train your folks right? or do you not have an organized job and command delegation? Yet, I never complained before because they still made it work when you ordered your two drinks and one or two pastry to sit and eat!

But today, I went in and ordered an ensemble of a dozen favorite pastries to take to a friend's place for a party. First, the guy wanted to ring me up for all what I want and then assemble the order. Although for such orders, you usually pick your ensemble, get boxed and then pay. Nonetheless, I complied, paid (close to $100), and then was asked to wait on the side as the guy boxed, based on some list he printed. Then he just handed out two large boxes. I had to step up and ask for a bag so that I can carry!...still fine!

Back at the party, I open the box, and there are 10 pieces instead of 12!! You did not COUNT your 12 pastries before you handed it to the customer?!! who trusted you and stood to the side, because you are a "high class" shop? What is your hiring and training based on?!! Yes, every time I bite into a cake or chocolate from LA Burdik, I can tell that they are completely a class apart! But this is inexcusable!!! If you create a brand, you got to know how to maintain the brand value!! Looking at the faltering service, I had my doubts all along- that I may even end up with a mangled bunch of pastries inside the box!! These are minimum things to ask for. If you cannot sustain, you can sell out of an online store or a pre-order counter!

What would you do? return my $16 or 18...how do you account for my embarrassment for showing up with a wrong number than I was supposed to? I am generally very supportive and considerate. But for who you are, the class, price and product range that you are serve, such carelessness cannot be accepted!! I love what LA Burdik makes, I have even accepted the pretentious sophistication show-off and over-smart servers that comes along with such businesses. But this was literally the...

I have been going to L.A. Burdick on a monthly basis for close to 10 years. This newer location is a lot more convenient with easier, better and closer parking options than the one near Harvard Square. I have never had a bad experience while getting a sugar fix, hot chocolate or something to go either for myself or a loved one. All too often it is easy to leave a bad review after a less than optimal experience. After tonight though, it really let me know several ways that the employees care about serving only the best.

I went in on a Saturday night at a peak time—7:30. The seating area was full, there were customers browsing and others waiting for their to-go orders to be ready. There were basically two people putting together the orders. One to make the hot chocolate or tea, and another to put it all together for each persons receipt. I’m not sure exactly why or what happened, but the guy making each cup finished my large milk hot chocolate. The other gentleman (sorry I didn’t ask them their names) was getting ready to grab my two Burdick cookies and an assortment of Luxembourgers. As he was going to do it though, he saw the hot chocolate staged ready to go with the lid on it. Without missing a beat he instructed his coworker to make another for me as that one would be cold. It was honestly only a minute or two. But to me it showed that he cares.

And that should be recognized, applauded and repeated for all to see and hear. They also have the cookies ready two ways-on a plate in the case, and others on a warming tray. He made sure to get the warm ones which is nice. (Even if I hadn’t inhaled them 3 minutes later and had a hint of delay warmer is better imho for choc chip cookies). Other than that he bagged up my macaroons and just about then a hotter cup of milk hot chocolate was ready to go. He apologized for the wait and thanked me for my patience as I left.

Trust me, any wait here is worth it. Everything always is and hopefully always will be delicious. Not only does it look good, but the flavor is 100% awesome. I also consider it a great place for either a date or to hang with a loved one. Give it a shot, I doubt you’ll be...
