Soooo this is probably an extremely weird place to review because on one hand it’s fantastic and on the other it’s probably the worst grocery store I’ve ever been to. The bad news, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to find what you’re looking for and it’s not very intuitive. Sauces are all over the place, fish sauce is in a completely different aisle than the hoisin, oyster, and the plethora of different soy sauces. Everything is all over the place. One kind of tofu was in one area near the frozen section, and the more common tofu was on the other side of the store with all the other soy products. It’s very strange. It took me way too long to know where anything was. I had to ask someone to find the fish sauce and they showed me then when I was looking for the rice noodles - a gentleman said: “over there” pointing in a general vicinity and was not very helpful. I also can’t tell who’s working there as there is no uniform, name tags or any indication of who’s working there other than seeing people put items on shelves. If you haven’t gone before I wish you the best of luck trying to find it. The good news is, anything and everything you can find. Everything from sweet treats of red bean paste to everything matcha to eel, to various kinds of tofu to every king of meat you could think of it’s ALL there. I highly recommend going if you’re craving snacks/ treats bc it’s much easier to find those items than other things. I really felt like I was in china/, Korea and/or Japan walking up and down the aisles A huge concern is the store. The store looks like it’s about to collapse any minute with holes in the ceiling across and even water leakage. Overall, it’s a 5 star grocery store with the organisation/ lack thereof of a 5 year old in an extremely...

In terms of size and scope, this place has a lot to offer. From produce, to meat, to fish, to everything in between, chances are you will find something that you have always wanted/wanted to try. My personal favorite section is the row of freezers filled with dumplings and steamed buns. In the in between isles. you will find noodles, sauces, spices, snacks, desserts, and other items to line your pantry with. The scope of their selection is impressive but can be overwhelming. However, be warned, the people who work there do not speak the best English so you might have to wander a bit if you are looking for a particular item. I asked three different staffers where I could find wanton wrappers (they are along the left hand side in the same section as the tofu) but they all looked at me and shook their heads.
Prices wise, some things are a better deal then others. My boyfriend did pretty well with purchasing meat and seafood but then things like Fish Sauce were a bit too pricey in my opinion. I did splurge and buy some decorative chopsticks for my apartment. A pack of ten or twelve for $4? Sure!
This place does smell, kind of like dead chicken. After an hour there, I wasn't feeling too well; that smell just really didn't sit right with me. However, the cashiers are very quick and you if you go in with a plan, you could be out in fifteen minutes.
I will come back to Super 88 but next time, I am going with a shopping list. Despite the three star rating, this place is really the best Asian market I've...
Read moreThis place is in two main parts: a food court, and an Asian supermarket. The food court has a variety of restaurants with food that can be eaten there or taken away. It is too grotty to eat there, however. I've had fairly good Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese take away, but have not sampled the Korean dishes. (The Vietnamese restaurant was not open recently) As others have indicated, the supermarket itself feels distinctly unclean. You can get packaged products that are hard to come by, and the freezer cases have things you may not want to think about. You might want to check the country of origin for some of these, since, e.g. Mainland China is not known for its ethical practices. Most recently, I was, perhaps inadvertently, terribly overcharged for 2 small cans of coconut water: $4.99 each! My receipt (which I didn't check until I got home, was made to look as if these were purchases of 2 sets of 6 cans.) The checkout personnel are not friendly or communicative, so at this point I'm inclined to skip making the trip to Allston to try to explain that really I bought 2 cans, not 12, but any savings I made buying the inexpensive items has been more than wiped out. Bottom line: good banh mi and other Asian dishes to take out from the food court; if you need a particular hard-to-find thing (including vegetables that you should wash and cook carefully) try the supermarket. But you won't want to do your regular...
