Ā Ā Ā Read moreUPDATE: People do profit off the sales of historical pieces that are racist, but I had expected QoH to be above that. Although I appreciate the response and I'm sure it was difficult to write; putting lowercase "black" in quotes* and apologizing for making me feel "uncomfortable" without apologizing for allowing their vendor to sell racist merchandise shows a lack of understanding and that's unfortunate. The representative I spoke with, as I stated, had no interest in even finding out what items I considered to be racist. And regardless of whether it's new or "vintage" is irrelevant. Displaying and selling reproduction or "vintage" racist postcards depicting; for one example, a white man aiming a gun at an exaggerated caricature of a Black person, should make ANYONE "uncomfortable".
*I hope the owner's of QoH will reconsider their response and I hope they will take the time to read the New York Times letter to its readers: "The Times will start using uppercase āBlackā to describe people and cultures of African origin, both in the U.S. and elsewhere."
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Racism is tolerated at this location. A vendorās booth had some reproduction āvintageā postcards containing overtly and disturbingly racist depictions of Black people. I approached a representative and asked if they had a policy against their vendors selling racist material. She said āwhy would we?ā āNothing is racist.ā āItās our countryās historyā. āItās historicalā. āFree speechā. āWe have over 200 vendors. We canāt control what they sell.ā She did not want to give a straight forward answer but rather argue the existence of racism with me. She also never even asked what I was referring to. I asked again ādo you have a policy against vendors selling racist material?ā. She finally, hesitantly answered ānoā. I said thank you and made my quick exit. Never to return. I have visited here many times and spent a great deal of money here over many years. Today that stopped. They have extraordinary finds and quality antiques and have always been extremely helpful and friendly. Todayās experience was...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIām a little torn, because upon discovering Queen of Hearts, I was so excited at the variety of treasures/vintage finds as Iāve never been to a store here in Georgia with such a selection (of really good stuff too). Itās such a charming place and each vendor has their own section thatās themed and it makes browsing super fun - itās easy to find things youāll love. However, when I went to the Buford location, I felt so uncomfortable there. I usually donāt complain about these types of things and keep quiet but this was the case at the Alpharetta location as well. The staff they employ here just seem soā¦.. cold? Not in an overtly rude way but like in a snobby, eerie way. Literally I walked in the door and upon seeing an employee I say hi and the first thing they do is go out of their way to frown at me? All while not saying a word and just shuffling by. As I was walking through the aisles I also felt some of the older men just staring at me. It was annoying. They were also in the middle of the aisle and at one point I quickly said excuse me to pass through; and without even acknowledging me they carry on talking like Iām either not even there or Iām unimportant. Also, I feel like they acknowledge white customers more. I have noticed that. That may not be the whole picture, and I donāt like throwing around that accusation all the time, but that is just what Iāve observed from my experience being at both locations a few times, as upon hearing these conversations between employees and customers not once have I been approached, nor other customers who are POC. Itās just disappointing because itās a nice place, but the demeanor here feels unwelcoming and needs to change. Iāve seen a fair few other reviews like this where POCs felt uncomfortable, but it felt shameful to see some of the responses try to explain it away without apologizing or really considering that personās experience. Until this changes, I wonāt feel comfortable...
