I'm going to give the LOCATION DETAILS first. Because if you can not find the theatre, you won't be catching a show.
The entrance is not clearly visible from the street. It's in the building to the rear of the old historic Methodist Church on E Broad St. at the corner of Lawrence St. Google maps may direct you onto Library St, which is basically a one-way driveway for a small apartment block with only parking for the apartments that connects to E. Broad St next to the Methodist Church.
Ok. Where to park? It may be difficult to find a spot close. If you are lucky, there is free street parking directly in front of the church and across the street. There is also free street parking available in the immediate area, but note the streets are narrow, some are one-way streets, street lighting and security may be an issue. There is also a large free city parking lot, a very short walk across E Broad St and a few hundred feet down Stacy St. across from the Barclay St playground. Always be mindful of the security of the area, especially at night
The stage is set up in the large church auditorium with metal folding seating. The building is extremely well maintained, clean, and comfortable. Of course, bathrooms are available and light concessions. The Playbill is available online using a cellphone QR scan code and there is a limited amount printed.
A very welcoming, friendly atmosphere!
Review of the show:
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
To my surprise, this play is a musical! The story was told in two acts with a brief intermission. The presentation volume and intensity level could be dialed down a little. While I am sure the cast was going for the visual impact of their characters while hammering down the lyrics, the venue is too small for big stage level intensity. At times, it was like being yelled at by a bunch of angry people glaring at you. There is a big difference between speaking to me and speaking at me. While the singing sounded good, the acting was hit or miss with a few actors clearly attempting to steal the show. The men's costumes were mostly cut and fit well adding positively to the show. The women's costumes cut and fit had room for improvement. This show needs to be a little less sweeny todd/jack the ripper and more good intentions of a doctor that's best effort for his fellow man costs him everything. Four Stars because the live orchestra was fantastic!
