Some of the coolest copper art that I've ever seen. In the old days this was a boom town for copper mining. The boom was so big that more wealth was extracted from here in copper than gold was during the gold rush. The town, though a shadow of the boom town it once was, still has all the fantastic architecture that you'd find down Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
In the store you'll find lots of full on sculptures and trinkets made from copper and other local rocks like sandstone (another big past export of the region). They also have a lot of books about the local history of the area. The owner is also super friendly and if you are looking for a great place to eat or drink (like Shute's) he will be happy to direct you.
The prices for some of the bigger copper sculptures are a little high as you might expect for copper goods these days.
Whether or not you want a souvenir, if you are in the area, this place is somewhere you...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I stopped here on a trip in January to check this gift shop out and were impressed right away. You can walk through 3 buildings/store room sections that are connected, and each one has a different variety of souvenir items. One section had knives, decorative UP related items, cups, and etc; another section had clothes; the third section had some knick knacks, blankets, and treats. Anyone can find a great UP souvenir to bring home from a trip! We got some shirts and sweatshirts and were happy with the many different ones you could choose from. The people working in each section were very friendly and nice to chat with. Some gift shop places don't make you feel welcome, but this one is the best we've been to in a long time.
Would highly recommend checking them out if you're on a...
Read moreWhat a cute little place. I came here as a first time visitor to the Keweenaw Peninsula, and I wanted a hat and shirt that reflected the KP and UP. I sure as heck found it. What a bunch of options available. The staff were all so friendly. When I was checking out, I was able to share my story of what I was doing up there. The kind gentleman running the register gave me some local recommendations on places to visit. I visited all of them and saw sights and found peace that would have otherwise been terribly missed...
