You don't want to miss this gem! I visited as part of a tour group and our female tour guide was amazing (and stunningly gorgeous)! Please forgive me - I don't recall her name and I'm so bummed about it. She was incredibly passionate about Harriet Tubman and knew a bazillion facts. Her storytelling ability was extremely captivating and she sang songs that felt like stepping back in time. This lovely volunteer has deeply immersed herself into the experience and has walked the entire Underground Railroad from here to Canada and down through Texas to Mexico. This just blew me away! The museum is lovely and there's plenty to see. There's a small gift shop area and a large one-person bathroom that's handicapped accessible. The museum is right downtown Cambridge and there are multiple free public parking locations in walking distance. There's a gorgeous mural on the side wall of Harriet Tubman that you don't want to miss. If you're looking for history- this museum and it's volunteers are the real deal. I highly...
Read moreProfoundly moving community-run effort! The exhibits and short films presented well Harriet Tubman's amazing courage, deep commitment, emotional intelligence, remarkable savvy, and great achievements as an Underground Railroad conductor, abolitionist and women's equality leader, Union soldier and spy, and ultimately a social service organizer for elderly self-emancipators. Support the Museum by buying something at the gift shop or paying for an educational walking tour of relevant sites in central Cambridge, MD. This local museum group helped inspire the National Park Service to create the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center south of Cambridge, as well as the regional and national historic sites list for the public to visit and/or learn about online. We can all applaud and be grateful for their work over the decades to help lead the way on public education for liberty, justice, and equal rights for all. Thank you! We'll visit again before long and...
Read moreCheck the calendar before you go! We traveled over 2 1/2 hours to visit the site and didn’t realize that the Governor of Maryland was visiting that day as well. It was a madhouse in the museum and it was very difficult to navigate with my walker. The one thing we were not able to do because of the crowds was see the orientation video which I really would liked to have seen.
The museum itself is well organized. I was hoping to learn more, it only took an hour to read everything and we take our time to read whatever is interpreted in museums. The gift shop was small and had limited merchandise. I bought a book because I heard someone talking about it and it sounded interesting.
For those, like myself with mobility issues, they had benches spaced out throughout the museum. My husband was able to drop me off at the door as well. The handicap parking was not in view of the door so it was not very close. The bathroom was easy to navigate...
