I've been to a few railroad museums, but this one absolutely blows the other experiences out of the water! A must see!
First the staff... INCREDIBLE! Not only are they the nicest crew of people I've ever met, but they are genuinely passionate about the history of trains and our state. They are willing to sit and talk to you about every single detail of each locomotive, train car, map, destination, owners, etc. I was expecting to be in and out in about 20m (expecting a quick walkthrough at best), but I was so enthralled with their narratives and factual prowess that I could have stayed all day
Second... the trains. I know they had signs not to climb aboard, but the intrusive kid thoughts really put up a good fight, and I was tempted 🤣 The trains are beautifully cared for, and most of them still run! Going back to my first point we got the history of each one and it made me fall in love with trains all over again. They also have a full service warehouse where they maintain and care for each train in their museum which was so cool. They also had a steam train running outside that you could ride!!
Third... the model railroads. This was the highlight. My husband and I geeked out for over an hour, combing over every inch of this masterpiece built by the lovely members of the Carson City Railroad Association. A few of the members were there, and they gave us the breakdown of how each set is made, how the tracks and signaling work, what they do, etc. It was amazing, and I was instantly inspired to finally begin our own model build. These guys truly love what they do, and it was obvious by their passion and excitement to share with us.
To cut it short, this place is a must visit for anyone visiting...
Read moreIt was wonderful. So we got there and there is a coin 🪙 machine on the entrance of the place and it had three types of shapes, one is like a train another one is Carson City and there was also one for Nevada. Really nice everything, it was like 8 dollars and we went and saw each train 🚂 🚞🚆 it was amazing because everything looks like it is bulletproof. Everything is metal and weights a ton. Each railroad has it's own story and each story is wonderful. Show from the beginning we got there was to the right at collection off miniatures of railroads, there were all made with a lot of details. Then there whas a big map 🗺️ on the floor of all United States and all the railroads it was really big something else really good was that in one part of the tour they would give you all the pieces that you needed to build a track and it was really nice. The most amazing thing I loved from the train museum whas that you could see how hard was it to build those machines. Everything was complete metal and wood sometimes. I really love it and I will go back. I really recommend this place, wonderful. Try to find out the dates 📅 they can give you a ride. What else can I say wonderful, nice, clean beautiful, I love it and I thank everyone that is working there and volunteering. Thank you so much...
Read moreThe Nevada State Railway Museum in Carson City is a wonderful place to visit...especially on rainy days or on days when you simply want to get the family out of the house. This museum has wonderfully restored locomotives, train cars and and a caboose, along with photos and the history of many of the locomotives and rail lines that operated in this area. What's most impressive is how the Artisans, Mechanics, Engineers, and volunteers have lovingly restored these relics of the past. Their attention to detail, combined with their knowledge and experience, is amazing. This is made clear when one sees the photos of the rail cars when they were reduced to piles of lumber. The Docents who give their time to guide and educate visitors, are amazing in their knowledge of these relics. I could blather on about this Museum, but instead, I'll close with the comment that this place is a hidden jewell on Carson Street (on your way to the Costco Gas Station), and you really should visit this museum for a bit of Northern Nevada history....
