I went to Southern Community Park for July 4th fireworks in Chapel Hill. We parked nearby the UNC hospital and took the free Chapel Hill Shuttle. The park wasn’t overly crowded or noisy compared to most other July 4th celebrations I’ve attended. There also went live performances or music playing. Only one ice cream bus was present, no food trucks so we walked to the nearest grocery store to buy some food and drinks. We found a nice spot in the field, not expecting a good view and ate our food. The staff made sure everyone was safe and not sitting nearby anywhere the firework debris might touch. When it got dark around 9:15ish the show started and last 15-20 minutes max. We experienced the closest display of fireworks we had ever seen, even better than Kenan Memorial Stadium. I would revisit this location annually for this holiday.

Great walking and running paths, children’s playground, covered pavilion, roller hockey rink, soccer fields, disc golf course, doggie parks, workout circuit, rest rooms, water fountains, basketball courts, and portable nets for pickle ball games on either the hockey rink or basketball courts. Grounds are well kept, except for the large doggie park, which tends to be sandy, muddy and full of cockle burrs.

I LOVE THIS DOG PARK! It has trees, chew toys, balls, mulch, a water spigot, and there is always a large dog there! Small dog park is not as popular but my “good boys” love it there! There is a picnic shelter and lots of benches to hang out at. Parking is sometimes a struggle as it is shared with the soccer field families but it’s so worth it!

The park feels rather empty—almost like a space without purpose. Unless you bring recreational equipment or already know how to make the most of it—perhaps through organized social activities or community events—there isn’t much to enjoy here.

In terms of access, the nearest exit toward Highway 40 is quite inconvenient and potentially dangerous. It requires a U-turn at a blind corner where speeding cars often appear unexpectedly, posing a real safety risk. A safer alternative would be to exit through the residential community instead, where traffic conditions are more controlled and visibility is better.

My Perspective: This park seems to have great potential but lacks activation. With thoughtful planning—like adding interactive facilities, sports areas, or hosting community gatherings—it could become a more vibrant and engaging public space. Safety around access points should also be a priority for local authorities, as ease and safety of entry often shape people’s overall impression and...
