My wife and I attended one of the wine tasting events at Rock + Acid. I have been to several wine tasting events over the years, including a few in this area. Most have been so-so at best. My expectations were not high, but at the very least it would be a decent way to spend an afternoon. Who knows maybe we would even find a decent wine or two. All I can say is that I was completely blown away. There were 6 wineries represented at this event and they were all clearly curated for their excellent wines. All of the wines served were at least technically good, and we found many to be absolutely excellent! Every table had at least 1-2 excellent wines and multiple very good wines. We ended up leaving having ordered over 2 cases from the tasting. Paula and Laura, the women who own Rock + Acid, really know their wine!
Apart from the wine tasting, Rock + Acid carries a great selection of wine. Paula or Laura will help you find a bottle to suit any meal, any occasion. I question whether the lone one-star reviewer at the time of this writing was actually at the same shop that we’ve been to, because I can’t really see either Laura or Paula being smug or snobby. I also can’t imagine them recommending Costco over something comparable and equally excellent from their own selection. For those that haven’t been, their selection is surprisingly broad for what looks like a small to medium shop on the outside. The selection of wine within the shop is not at all classist. They have wines ranging from very inexpensive to obscenely expensive, they will have something delicious for you within your budget. To boot, they keep the shop at around 55 degrees to maintain the quality of the wine they sell. That is quite a commitment to their product!
Overall, I would have to say that this is one of the best wine shops that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting and an absolute “must visit” for those that truly enjoy wine in the...
Read moreHowdy! Ofcourse, everyone has a right to their opinion, however, as a supporter of local businesses and female entrepreneurs, I'd like to address Ms. Amy Morrow's poor review, simply because I don't want this particular opinion to deter anyone from coming to one of the most quaint local wine shops in town! As a non-biased animal lover who does NOT currently have pets, it's important to note that Southern Village is an incredibly pet friendly neighborhood and Rocks+Acid has accomodated pets and pet parents as evidenced by the Pet Friendly SIGN in front of the establishment. If you don't like pets...then perhaps consider a different venue? In addition, in the 2 years I've visited this wine shop, I have never encountered a loud or annoying pet and this seems to have been an anomaly...not the norm. The owner Paula and her team, strive to provide excellent customer service and if the dog annoyance was brought to anyones attention, it would have been addressed respectfully. There IS an eclectic variety of wine selections and the wine pour on the contrary is quite generous! And the seats? Really? You're going for wine tasting, not dinner! Whether you want to have a solo date with a good book, share some time with your partner or family, or hang out with friend,Rocks and Acid is a prime spot for great wine and a great vibe! 100% will...
Read moreI was so excited to have a wine store open so close to us. I went to buy a bottle of red as a thank you. I had recommendations from a friend for four good reds to choose from (I asked for under a $100). This is a friend who eats and drinks with a well-known chef from this area, and he has never disappointed us in his recommendations. When I showed them the list, the reaction was "We don't have any of those. I know those vineyards, and they are terrible. You can get those wines at Costco". First thought - ironic that the tagline for this place is "curiosity without the snobbery" because that sure sounded snobby. Second thought - awesome if I can get really good wines at Costco, thanks for the tip (but a bit suspicious because my friend surely would have told me if that is where I should get them!)
I didn't take the bait and ask for their recommendation because, quite frankly, I was put off with the arrogance.
Went home to do a bit of research: ALL of the 4 wines have been ranked 92 and 93. ALL of the vineyards get excellent reviews, two as "gems not discovered". NONE of them were available at Costco (what a shame!)
Maybe they are more expert than the experts, but they need to change their tagline. I have not encountered such snobbery around wine...
