This was an absolutely enjoyable cruise! Our tour guide Mary Rose was not only very knowledgeable but very engaging, super nice and pleasant.
We took the sunset hour cruise, which was spectacular as we got to see the Architecture as the lighting changed bit during the course of the cruise, giving us different perspectives.
We learned a lot about the various unique architectural challenges and history of some iconic buildings and skyscrapers along the Chicago River and surroundings. There are so many stories we learned about surrounding the history and evolution of the present-day Chicago architectural marvels. One of the most spectacular engineering marvels we learned about were some skyscrapers around the part where the Chicago river splits off into three directions, that the base of the towers had to significantly smaller than the top floors, due to restrictions on the building space at street street level. It just defies common logic how they have built theses towers but with amazing engineering solutions. To accomplish this feat, the designers chose a core supported structure, a massive central concrete spine that holds the elevator core and also transfers the load of the upper floors down to the foundations. Also to reduce the sway and counter act it, a very heavy object was placed on top, which also has the ability to move somewhat freely. When the wind pushes on the building one direction, the heavy object naturally moves in the opposite direction, helping to counteract the oscillation. Hidden in the upper floors are several giant tanks called ‘tuned liquid sloshing dampers’ which hold 160,000 gallons of water. These special tanks of liquid help to dramatically dampen and reduce the building’s sway. The trick to getting a good seating on the cruise is to get there early! But you can be on either side of the boat and since the cruise takes you up and down the river, it doesn’t matter which sides you sit on, there is plenty to see on both sides. It can get windy, so makes sure you carry a light jacket (even during summer) or dress in layers. We absolute recommend this cruise to anyone visiting Chicago for the first time or are fascinated by...

Read moreLovely time at the Shoreline Sightseeing 75-minute Architecture Tour.
The tour is about $45-50 but we did it as part of the CityPass package. Regardless of how you book it, you will still have to reserve a designated tour time as there are limited seats on the boat.
This tour left from Michigan Avenue and the Riverwalk. (There is also an option for a boat that leaves from Navy Pier if that is easier.) Once in that area you take the stairs down to the Riverwalk area and wait on line until boarding. They make a few announcements on the process while you are waiting on line...which was helpful.
When ready to board, your ticket is scanned and then you proceed onto the boat. There are chairs in the center, chairs toward the back (shaded) and bench-style chairs along the sides. There is also a lower (interior) level...but since it was a nice day...mostly everyone was on the top outdoor area. It is definitely a good idea to arrive early and wait on line to board...particularly if you are a larger group and want to sit together. There were a few larger groups toward the end of the line that had to split up as they couldn't find seats together. We arrived about 20-25 minutes before the cruise departure time and had lots of seating options.
The tour itself was great as it navigated through the Chicago River. The tour guide was very good...offering some great information on the buildings in and around the river. He would also walk around and take questions during his brief breaks throughout the tour.
Toward the end of the tour, the boat ends up near the entrance to Lake Michigan. With the boat turned perpendicular to the city, it stops to give tour-goers an opportunity to take photos and selfies against the city backdrop....this was a great idea!
There is a drink and snack shop on the bottom level...serving alcoholic drinks as well.
The boat left and returned on-time which is appreciated, especially for those...
