Like many people, my first introduction to the Czech language was through Duolingo. I quickly realized that trying to learn a new language on the app was a poor substitute for actually taking lessons with an instructor. If you’re only looking to memorize a couple phrases, sure, use the app. But if you are interested in actually learning the language, courses like the ones offered at T. G. Masaryk are an excellent (and very reasonably priced) investment.
I can’t say enough good things about the instructors and admins who designed such a great learning experience. I started at T.G. Masaryk in the online adult Beginners I class with very limited experience in the Czech language. I’ve steadily moved through the levels and now, in Beginners III, my Czech in-laws are impressed by how much my speaking skills have improved. The course is well organized and I particularly enjoy learning about Czech history, culture, and traditions in addition to learning the language. Kristýna is an excellent instructor, she provides tons of learning resources, and she has an immense amount of patience with her students. I have no hesitation in recommending T. G. Masaryk for anyone who wants to...
Read moreI married into a Czech family with little cultural awareness outside of what I had learned through my in laws and only had taken Romance languages in high school.
I stared taking adult Czech language classes on and off and both times Klára then Kristýna had both been incredibly instructive, patient, and inviting. It can be humbling being a beginner but I always felt safe making mistakes and struggling and learning with the pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. I had taken a semester of Latin previously which helped me be ready for declensions. It was also a great way to learn more about my in law's culture and traditions.
The school also puts on a lot of events with artists, historians, and the community at large to celebrate the Czech history and culture in Chicagoland and abroad. Everyone I've met is a fantastic steward of the culture and we're lucky to have them here.
We'll be sending our 4 and 6 year olds there in the fall! It's reassuring to see their first cohort of their youngest students not just sticking with it but having really enjoyed their many years...
Read moreThis is a great place to learn not only the Czech language, but also experience and learn the culture as well. I started with T.G. Masaryk a few years ago not even being able to say hello or goodbye. They provided everything I needed to learn from introductory courses, to online classes during covid, to an advanced beginner course.
Both Kristýna and Klára are wonderful teachers who make learning fun and it's evident in each class that they love bringing their country to you. And if class falls near a holiday they will probably also bring you a wonderful cake or other yummy traditional dish as well!
I will miss the school, and Klára and Kristýna very much - but its for a good cause as my (native Czech) wife and I are now moving to Prague. Thank you T.G.M for helping me learn enough to feel comfortable and confident in my...
