I waited a little bit to write my review on Powell MMA and here is how my Jiu Jitsu experience has gone so far. Both in the gym and in competition. Jiu Jitsu is one of those things where you get out of it what you put into it. Powell MMA is a place where you can come as a hobbyist or as a compeititor and not feel out of place.
With the availablilty of classes, it would be tough to find an excuse not to come to a class thorughout the week!
Every person that I've trained with has helped me grow in a variety of ways such as recapping live rounds, encouragment through conditioning drills, and keeping the pace as if we were competing the next day.
I've noticed that Adam (the head instructor) will give us the tools to use and allows us to determine what works and doesn't work for our own game.
Various looks and approaches are demonstrated so you aren't forced to learn once single style and can determine how'd you like to approach Jiu Jitsu.
The learning style is fast-paced and there is a lot of time to practice what was taught between drilling technique, positional training, and live sparring/rolling at the end of class.
The more experienced members in the gym are more than happy to assist you with questions or show you techniques before/during/after class. I started training for the very first time towards the end of June (2022) and recently competed in my 2nd Jiu Jitsu competition.
The amount of support, level of coaching, and energy that is present during the competition was amazing. I felt calm and comfortable in my abilities that I learned solely at Powell MMA.
Coming from only weight lifting and doing recreational sports in college, I was able to secure 2 wins and learn A TON about my game that I'm eager to address and see where how far I will be in the...
Read moreOverview: After around 2 - 3 months of attending this gym, I’m impressed with the focus on practicality of the training. Most BJJ classes follow the progression of learning takedowns followed by setting up a submission and finishing the submission. Drilling each of the three stages, then ending with open Matt rolling. Kickboxing is done as a warmup, muscle memory drills then partner practice, ending in bag work. Very fun, and I have felt muscle memory start to take root.
Safety: I’ve had an amazing and safe experience here. Adam reminds the beginner classes to keep weight within 30lbs of each other, so that accident risk is low.
Results: Only speaking from personal experience I’ve probably had 4 months of jujitsu experience in my life the majority of it at this gym. I received bronze at a local round robin tournament against much more fit competitors.
Benefits: Adam is always open to questions and available to give pointers. Membership cost is at an excellent price point, and punch cards are available as a more flexible option. Water and instruction are all available and it great quantity. Kickboxing & conditioning classes are offered and both are a great workout.
Cons: Wish I could...
