Ok sound quality and good views from most of the seating area but this is more than offset by poor signage, a stage that is a bit small, bad-attitude security guys, very overpriced drinks with limited food, and inadequate "big" screens
Went to both Cheap Trick and the Florida orchestra (FLO) concerts in the opening days of this new venue.
The FLO concert was open seating and so we tested a few areas including just walking behind the seating sections. The view is generally ok with a likely full view from most areas (less so if you're sitting on the very left or right). So both the 100 and 200 sections are probably ok. The stage is small so you can see all of it, but it's very small, deep but not wide. There were two screens but really only the seated areas can see it. The sound quality was obviously being tested both nights, so it's not bad and hopefully improving.
The worst was the sun which covers much of the front seating (i.e., nearly all the best seats in the 100 section and some of the 200 section) before nightfall. Thus, the sold out free tickets were less than 1/5 full for the first half of FLO. Dozens of people were constantly moving out of the sun, including ourselves, to avoid the hundreds of sunny seats for most of the FLO concert.
Seats are close but not tight, and not padded but reasonably comfortable for plastic chairs.
Also of note is the lack of any signs for "The Sound". Not one entrance sign was seen and we were not the only ones annoyed at having to back track to avoid fenced off areas that were not labeled. There should also be accessible signs as I saw a number of wheelchairs, scooters, etc. struggling.
Beer was $10-$12, single cocktail drinks were $12 and doubles are $22, so most drink stalls were empty. Bottled water isn't allowed and costs $4.
Finally, one of the annoying features is the utter inconsistencies with the bag check and security there. While some let anyone and many bags in, there were at least 2-3 guys who were typically the "nobody trying to be a somebody" types. One said a bag could not be bigger than a piece of paper folded twice (!), while we saw large backpacks and large purses once inside. Very bad first impression, given it takes patience to find an un-signed entrance, it was Independence Day (i.e., severe lack of freedom), and then to have to walk back to the car and back to the venue only to see bags much larger than yours waltz right in...who hires these people?
Will think twice or thrice before visiting this venue again, because right now, it's unfortunately not worth it. I am very surprised the town has made such a big deal out of this venue, which is really just like the Midflorida Amphitheatre in many parts...nothing...
Read moreI am little sad to be writing this writing this review because I have been so excited for this venue to open. It's a short car/bike ride from my house and I am still hopeful that it will reinvigorate the downtown. First the good news... The location by virtue of being right on the water is nice and allows for a nice breeze during the sweltering summer heat. I know some have mentioned the sound quality, but I did not find that to be an issue and could hear the bands clearly. Bathrooms were fine, probably because they are new.
Now the critiques all of which are fixable, so I hope they take everyone's (reasonable) feedback to heart.
Biggest Issue: They don't seem to know the definition of rain or shine. It means you can play in the rain or shine. After a two hour delay it became clear that this wasn't the case. Major design flaw for an outdoor venue in Florida (or anywhere for that matter). Install a screen you can lower or something to protect the stage at least. Water was coming right in so they obviously couldn't perform. Also, the barely communicated what was going on until like an hour and a half in (except sorta on social media). Then equally when they sun came out it was so bright you couldn't see the stage. Poor design but I feel like this is fixable. Also, design wise I agree with others that some screens for those on the lawn would be nice. It was a pretty good view but still it was hard to see anything at times.
Other than that the seats are kinda uncomfortable but that could have been from sitting so long with the delay. The lawn felt like it would be a better option for you bum. Same comments re the vendors that others have had. Drinkwise there were plenty of options. Food not so much. Also, 5 dollars for water (especially where you should encourage people to drink) is a bit much but that's a lot a venues as well so...
As other people have mentioned their bag and other stuff policies does not seem to be enforced equally. Wasn't an issue for us this time as we didn't bring anything but would be nice to know what the policies are and if they will be enforced for everyone.
Parking and traffic are terrible but it's downtown clearwater so it was kinda expected. Hopefully they take this into account with further development. Will try to bike next time since this is close to the trail.
In the end the bands were really great but two-hour delay led to us having to miss the end of the show because well it was Monday and we had to work in the am. I think this venue has such great potential. It relatively small and intimate and close to home. Hopefully they work through some of these growing pains. Will certainly be back...on a sunny...
