Beautiful old Italian Renaissance building originally constructed from 1858-1885. While inspired largely by the Kirkbride Asylum Plan, Babcock did not have staggered wings as in a true Kirkbride, and was more closely related to a Cottage Plan. This stunning structure, with it's iconic cupola, was unfortunately victim to 2 fires in 3 years; the most recent one in late 2020, which did severe structural damage and caused the dome to fall in. It's truly a shame Babcock met such a horrific fate; but it's good they have decided to repurpose rather than demolish this building. From those explorers who loved this epic site, Rest in Peace, Babcock! Enjoy these pictures...fond memories.

Abandoned beauty. We didn't dare go in, even tho a gate was open as security was parked all around. We did walk around the building, the church across the street and the cottages. The hospital campus was huge. Security did greet us when walking around the cottages and we were asked to stay in our car.

So sorry to lose the iconic turret looking over Elmwood Ave. This picture is Richland hospital’s view of the fire.

Awesome place to visit and experience. As stated it is illegal to trespass, but in all honestly it is worth it to see everything. I went there and took too long and had my car out front, Police were super nice and just told me to go home, that I could be hurt in there. If you are going to enter just be aware that you should be fairly quick, pick a good time. Maybe afternoon or a weekend or something but probably not too late, DO NOT park a car on the premises if you’re entering! Park close by, walk to the building to enter and move swiftly. General creepy ambiance to it. And PLEASE do not damage the building or anything to do with it as it is a historical building and it will be renovated very soon for something new for the city to utilize. Enjoy the creepy haunted state mental hospital / psych ward.

(P.S. I climbed onto the roof and up to the spot at the very top. Amazing view and very cool. If you’re up...

I changed this review from 1 to 5 stars. I wanted to review the Babcock apartment complex which is really bad, but apparently this entry is for the historic site.

There is nothing wrong about the historic site.

Please consider removing the link to the apartment complex as this led to the assumption that this google maps entry is related to the...
