I was taken here for a birthday and overall really enjoyed my experience, but when I wanted to come back & make a reservation I was so disappointed by the customer service! There are so many absurd policies & fees around making reservations for “large parties” (8-10 people) such as a fee associated with a 24 hour cancellation policy, or a fee if “too many” members of your party drop out. And even after agreeing to all of those policies even though they seemed a little inflexible, I ended up getting my reservation CANCELLED by Pennswood three days prior to my reservation due to predicted rainy weather! I am so frustrated! If you’re going to be inflexible and enforce a bunch of fees and policies upon your guests around cancellation, the least you can do is make indoor spaces available so that customers don’t end up getting cancelled on by you. After fighting tooth & nail to get a reservation too?? The wine & atmosphere is not worth the amount of absurd regulations in place here.
Edit: in regard to the long-winded response I received from Pennswood - I did not receive any messages or calls from your so-called “customer service.” Instead of writing a novel triple the length of my review, your time would likely be better spent making contingency plans to accommodate larger parties indoors when the weather is...
Read morePenns Woods has always had a nice selection of wines, with friendly staff to boot. The tasting room, in a pretty little farm house, is admittedly a bit small. But the staff is accommodating, and they will open other areas if larger numbers of people show up. The front porch is a nice place to relax with a glass of wine if you are out and about in the Brandywine area.
I am a total fan of their more traditional dry wines (love the reserves!), but not so much of the sweeter varieties that they are producing as of late. But hey...everybody has their own preferences, right? Prices are in line with other wineries, as are the tasting fees. If I remember right, if you buy wine after tasting, they will waive the fee (don't hold me to that, but I think that was the practice).
I'm amused at some of the remarks I've seen from people about feeling short-changed with tasting fees and light pours. Seriously, wine wasting staff members are similar to other service oriented workers. Talk with them. Be friendly and outgoing. Ask questions. Interact, and they will help you out. Sometimes that means an extra taste of something you want to retry. Not that this is the reason I try to be friendly...but I do feel that people get service that reflects their personality. (Okay...end of rant.)

Read moreBeen a member for 2 years and just got kicked out because we have kids....rubbish family environment. Don’t bother going if you have a family. Today on a warm but rainey Sunday afternoon we went to Penns Wood as we have done for years and as we have done with our two six month old twins for the last 6 months only to be told that we had two options. 1. Sit in the rain on the lawn.... or 2. Sit at a table next to the toilet but no where else was allowed as our quiet happy twins were so offensive. And we were told this was the new status quo so even though we are members and pay over $400 a year we would not be able to enjoy any of the benefits as all of these were to be enjoyed at the house where we and our offensive offspring were not to enter.... obviously the establishment was laughing all the way to the bank.....please rethink your culture, most decent people care for families and enjoy their happiness. And as a result benefit in their and their friends patronage for...
