I stopped in the Banner Elk Shirt company to purchase a gift. Found a long sleeve-T that I thought was reasonably priced. After the purchase and walking to my car, I thought maybe I was charged the wrong price by accident. The shirt was priced @$34.99 but my charges came to $39.92 or +$4.93 to the purchase price. I went back in and asked and was told they charge their customers to use credit/debit cards a stated 3.25%. So, I said okay and left but it did not sound right. The sales tax rate for Banner Elk, NC is 6.75% and I was charged and additional 5.6% on top of the sales tax or 12.35% total. Based on the additional 3.25% stated, where did the other 2.35% go? Now, I know I only bought 1 shirt but if you are a family looking for souvenirs for visiting Banner Elk, Sugar Mountain or Beech Mountain chances are you would buy much more. This is a very nice, well maintained with a lot of selection store, no doubt. BUT they do not post anywhere of these additional fees added to your payment. Based on the laws in NC, it is mandatory they have this fact posted and note to the customer before close of sale. Furthermore, I paid with a debit card. It's not the amount it was more so when I asked the comment was, no we do not post notification anywhere and you're the first person who has asked!
FYI, for those interested as well as for the owner: Can NC businesses charge a fee for using a debit card? If a business is allowed to charge a fee for using a debit card, they must clearly disclose it to customers before completing the transaction. In the United States, businesses are generally prohibited from charging a fee for using a debit card, but in some regions, they may be allowed to charge a small fee, known as a surcharge. Major card issuers, including Visa and Mastercard, expressly forbid surcharging debit card...
Read moreThe open sign was on, it was 7:47pm and we were ready to quickly get what we needed and head out. We were greeted by a head full of hair and the back of a cell phone as the employee didn’t even look up when he said “I’m closed.” This was on a Friday, Feb 26 just in case the owner is reading :-) (by the way, I rarely hire anyone that drives a Subaru). Defeated, we got right back in our car and spent our $380 at the next store over and still were finished by the time this tragic place was...
