I’m quite late posting this review. But HL Computer Repair is awesome! So, I’m posting it anyway. I had a major scare last year, October 4, 2023. HL Computer Repair took care of me.
While browsing the internet via laptop, I clicked on a link that was supposed to give me another option for booking my Uber ride without my having to download the app to my phone. Turns out that that link was a scare link that made one think a trojan virus was instantly installed onto the computer. The link and associated page that popped up falsely presented itself/masked itself as HP Support and provided a phone number for help. I panicked and was temporarily foolish enough to call it. ☹
I chatted with who I thought was an HP rep, gave him remote access to my laptop, checked my bank account, and let him quote me a cost to remove the alleged Trojan virus. The cost seemed outrageous, so I put him on hold to go ask for a second and third opinion from my family and friends. They so kindly assured me that I was quite close to being scammed and that my laptop was actually exposed by me calling the phone number. My family and friends went to work removing what they could from my laptop. But of course, they recommended professionals take a deeper look as soon as possible.
I discovered HL Computer Repair. They had so many positive reviews from customers who had experiences similar to mine and had attained awesome results. I felt relief immediately. I had my friend take me to HL Computer Repair the next day. I met and chatted with computer repair specialist Patrick Dao. I explained what happened. He understood and shared that other computer owners have made similar mistakes. Patrick quoted me a price for diagnosing my laptop. He would check my computer for viruses, malware, outdated antivirus programs, etc. and clean up any viruses and malware that he found.
I left my laptop with Patrick and hoped my laptop could be saved. I admit that I panicked again later that night when I realized that I hadn’t attained any documents stating that my laptop was in HL Computer Repairs’ possession for repairs. No real sleep that night.
But Patrick called me back while I was at work the next day (Friday, October 6, 2023) with a diagnosis. I was thanking God and the Powers that Be for having a repair shop and staff member that was honest. Patrick explained that I absolutely had spyware on my laptop. The remote access that I gave the fake computer tech masquerading as HP Support allowed him to install a dangerous Remote Access Anytime Spyware on my laptop. He and his organization of cyber criminals/scammers could have gotten further unauthorized access to my laptop if I had not reached out to HL Computer Repair.
Patrick removed the spyware; then he installed free versions of antivirus apps and malware cleanup apps and a version of firewall and defender apps. for $150. It was definitely worth it! Peace of mind.
Patrick taught me what to do in terms of weekly scans, etc. so that I could feel safe using my laptop. He also told me what to look out for in terms of potential scams when on that internet. Patrick and HL Computers really helped me out.
Three months later and my laptop is still going strong!!!! The malware app does its regular scans and removals, and the firewall app does its job well on a regular basis and shows me positive results. Both apps offer me the option to upgrade; I don’t take the upgrades. The free versions are adequate for protecting my computer. I strongly recommend HL Computer Repair for handling other customers’ desktop computer and laptop challenges too. And of...
Read moreI have had numerous computers serviced at HL over the years, but this has come to an abrupt end! I am not sure if the ownership has changed (potentially impacting the quality of service rendered), but I would rate my latest (and last) experience as an absolute ripoff. Essentially, I was experiencing an error during the booting of my laptop. Thus, I took the computer in to have the issue resolved. Within a day (the good), I was notified that my computer was ready and that I could come in an pick it up. Upon arriving at the store, the tech (who may in fact, be the owner) powered up my machine and,....you guessed it............there was the error. I left the machine with them again, and within a day (this should be the good,.....but....not), I was contacted and told the machine was fixed, and I could come in a pick it up. Fast forward..... I went it to pick it up, and the the tech/owner powered up the machine.......yes, you guessed it..........same error. Tech/owner continued to fumble around, checking drivers, etc. (this had to drag on for at least 20 minutes). While I was standing there, I whipped out my smartphone, and plugged the error into Google. Based upon my research (that took no more than 5 minutes), I found the answer. The owner/tech acknowledged what I had found to be the culprit and continued to fumble to the point of finding a workaround (i.e., not fix). To add insult to injury, I was handed a bill for $85.00!!!!!! To be fair, I noticed that the original bill was for $90.00, but I noticed that I was given a $10.00 "Labor Discount" -- I guess this means I was only ripped off for $85.00, versus $95.00. Uh,....news flash............I pretty much identified the problem and suggested the fix (which I could have actually done) while standing at the counter!!! When paying, the gent asked if everything was o.k., to which I replied, "no", and pointed to the $85.00 bill. His response was, "it's working, right?". As they say on the Mastercard commercial,....."priceless." The positive aspect of this experience was that I restrained myself from going into a complete meltdown over this fiasco......my main consideration in this was that Dekalb County Jail didn't have Wifi. To HL Computer: here is a lesson from Business 101 -- it costs a heck of a lot more to gain a new customer, than to keep an existing one. To this end, you have failed miserably. To everyone else out there who may be considering doing business with this outfit ---------- I strongly recommend you don't. This episode was shame on me -------- the next will be shame on...
Read moreThis review is several weeks late, but I wanted to let folks out there know that HL Computer provides top notch, professional services. I knew my laptop had a virus and the performance of my laptop got so bad that I could barely use it, I shopped around and read reviews to find someone to help me. HL Computer customer reviews were consistently positive so I called and spoke to one of their techs, Carey. After just a few minutes of speaking with him, I felt confident that I had found the right place so I took my laptop in. Carey and I discussed the issues at hand, he quoted me a very fair price on the virus fix, and he promised he would stay in communication with me if any other issues were found before any work was done so I would have no surprises on the final bill. I left for a trip the next day to spend Christmas with family on the west coast and was gone two weeks. Carey stayed in touch with me as promised and he went above and beyond in resolving all of my issues to repair the severe damage to my laptop hard drive that was the result of me letting the virus run rampant for such a long time. He informed me of everything along the way and I was given the opportunity to make decisions in advance of him proceeding with the suggested fix. When I returned to pick up my laptop, the price he quoted was what I paid and my laptop is performing like new. I will continue to use HL for any future issues with my equipment and confidently recommend them to anyone who needs help with there computers. These folks know what they are doing, and they are more than fair in their pricing. I am a very satisfied customer and thank you Carey for doing such a...
