I am SO ANGRY with UNIVERSITY MALL THEATRES (on Braddock Rd, near George Mason University), I could SPIT NAILS!!! If I could give them ZERO stars, I would!!!!
Took my daughter to see a movie as a birthday treat. Couldn't remember if this was one of those theatres that was insanely cold, so I brought both of our skating club jackets in with me, which she put down next to her. After we headed out the door to drive to skating practice, I realized that we'd left the two jackets behind. She picks up her phone, looks up the number, and calls the theatre to ask if they'd found the jackets. All of the sudden, I hear her burst into tears and say "Why?? WHY??" I couldn't understand what she was trying to say, and I was completely freaked out that she was crying so much, so I pulled into a parking lot and took the phone from her. I couldn't hear anyone on the phone, so I hung up, and asked her what was wrong. Turns out, the man that answered the phone TOLD HER THAT HE'D SOLD THE TWO JACKETS!!!!!! Who the HELL tells a 9yo that he sold her jacket?!?!?!?!?!? At this point, she's sobbing uncontrollably, because she's convinced that he's actually done this, despite my saying that there's no way he could have actually sold them. (Apparently, he sounded "very serious" about having sold them on the phone). Since I couldn't hear anyone, I hung up and redialed her phone and got the man on the phone........I asked him how he could say something like that to my child. His answer "Well, she sounded a lot older!" ARE YOU F'ING KIDDING ME?!?!?!??!?!?! Who CARES how old she sounds?!?!?!?!? Why the hell would you say something like that to ANYONE?!?!?!?! Who makes a stupid joke like that?!?!?!?! I told him "You never know who is on the other end of the phone.....and now my child is beating herself up over having left the two jackets, and you decided to play a joke. Your reasoning behind it being ok is that she sounds OLDER??? Am I supposed to apologize for having a mature child?!?!?!?!?" I told them we were on the way back to pick up the jackets, and my daughter tells me she doesn't want to go into the theatre because she's afraid they actually DID sell the jackets. I told her I wanted the man to SEE what he did to her and that he needed to apologize to her. We walked in, and the three teenagers that were working when we left were standing there, looking very sheepish. One of them said "Are you here for the jackets?" and I told her we were. She handed them to me without saying anything. I asked if they had anything to say about the 9yo who was still crying and what had been done to her. They said "It was the owner who said it to her, not us!" AS IF THAT MADE IT OK!!!!!!!!!! To add insult to injury, the owner couldn't muster the professionalism, maturity, or BALLS to come out and face me himself!!! And I know he was still there, and I know he heard me, because his car was in the lot (he has personalized tags), and the door to his office was open, lights on. I said that I was absolutely horrified that someone would say something like that at all, and their response was "That's just how he is.....it was only a joke!" I'm sorry...if you own a business, it's your RESPONSIBILITY to take care of the people who PAY YOU.....that's what customers do! This is a privately owned theatre, so the profits are going into his pockets, not some corporation's. For him not to have the COMMON COURTESY to face me and my child, is reprehensible!!! His way of apologizing was to try and give us movie passes.......as if I'd EVER set foot in there again when he didn't have the GUTS to face us!!!
The owner of the theatre should be ASHAMED of himself for his behavior......and I won't stop telling people what he did......So, I say "THANKS" to him for RUINING my daughter's birthday......I hope he's proud...
Read moreI visited on a Friday afternoon to watch a film that had been in theaters only a few weeks. This theater sits in the back of a mall area close to George Mason University. Convenient eating options are nearby, including McAlister’s Deli and Taco Bamba. Prices for both movies and concessions are more than reasonable, so purchases carry a good value here.
Agreeing with other reviewers, I commend the spirit of customer service of the staff. They embody a certain neighborhood-like quality to their customer interactions and friendliness in their demeanors. I witnessed one manager speaking positively and encouraging to concession attendants and another professionally speaking to another staff person about training others on how to best manage a theater like this one. The theater thankfully accommodates groups. I hear others speak about how the staff normally provide for prompt cleaning and starting of movies. A reminder and/or additional time may be needed in rare cases I suspect, as my theater needed to be cleaned prior to me seating myself. The movie started ten minutes late after another customer reminded the staff to start the movie.
Sound quality inside the theater in which I sat was quite good as was picture quality. The only trade off to expect for the low prices comes in the form of more traditional seating that in some cases shows wear in the form of cracked upholstery. Seat numbers are also hard to see in some rows but can be deduced relatively easily. All in all however I appreciate this local non-chain theater being here and could readily make a return visit paired with an eatery in the same mall area for a...
Read moreThis is a Hidden Gem in the rough. I was born and raised in the DC metro area in this place has existed since 1977 and I didn't know about it until today August 23rd 2025. The staff were very friendly the management staff very accessible and the prices of the movie as well as the concessions were outstanding. They have some of the lowest prices of ever seen despite the fact they only have three screens to show movies on the theaters were clean the bathrooms were clean the front lobby was clean they do have a party room that you can use for special events and it's almost like a throwback to Mom and Pop's theaters like it used to be back in the old days. You have a certain sense of a nostalgic feeling when you walk through the doors it's a small theater and compete against some of the bigger theaters and the bigger chains which have 10 to 15 and sometimes 20 screens to show movies on they hold their own very well I would highly recommend going to this place if you just want to get away for a couple of hours and enjoy good movie they do give refills on popcorn for only a dollar. Their selection of candy their pizza chicken tenders a mozzarella sticks are all very good choices also I enjoyed myself and now live in Savannah Georgia and have since 1996 but every time I come home going forward I will try to seek this place out and enjoy another movie when I'm up here thank you team University Mall Theaters it's the little guys that bite the hardest but always give the best customer service I...
