I had been going pretty steadily to the Culver City location for awhile before last year and had to stop due to Covid closures. I have now just started back again after more than a year away. My instructors for the aerobic classes are still going strong. I enjoy the Silver Sneakers classes with Kristy and she is great and a wonderful example of a physically fit and toned senior! Her classes are perfectly geared for seniors, safe yet invigorating, with lots of good stretching, toning muscles with light weights and plastic balls that help with dexterity. All of her exercise routines keep your joints loose and supple and they aid with your sense of balance.
I also meet with a trainer Victer J. who helps me with strength training. He varies his sessions concentrating on different muscle groups. We also alternate some sessions with aerobic boxing, which is my favorite! He shows me some boxing combinations and corrects my form. This is a great cardio exercise, and he keeps it both fun and challenging.
When I first joined the Overland Avenue, Culver City location, I consulted with and signed up for a trainer with the help of Nathan L. He is knowledgeable and very accommodating. He explained my options, set me up with my trainer Victer, and he did my initial assessment to figure what fitness level I was starting at and he listened to what my health concerns were as well as what goals I was looking to achieve. He went out of his way to make me feel comfortable. In addition, he has a very fun, friendly personality and he never fails to have a smile on his face.
The staff maintains the facility very well and I often see personnel cleaning and sanitizing the restrooms and exercise rooms between sessions. I enjoy going to this location and I like the people...
Read moreI sometimes like this gym and sometimes I dont. That is why I am giving it a 3 star.
They have a lot of cardio equipment, which is great because during the busy hours you can still find a machine for yourself or wait very little to get one. These are located on the first and second floors of the gym. What I have noticed recently is that many of the machines frequently are out of order or the TVs do not work.
On the third floor are all the free weights, lifting equipment, and machines. This area gets really full during the busy hours and most of the time you have to wait or run to a free machine before someone else takes it. Again, some of the machines frequently have out of order signs. It can get really messy too with people leaving free weights in different areas etc.
On the first floor there is also a pool and sauna aside from the cardio and training area. The sauna is pretty big which I love going to. Recently, the wood on the seating has started to lift, which annoys me when I'm climbing to sit in the upper row. Feels like it might break!
In the underground level are the fitness classes. I haven't tried any of them since I prefer to lift, but they look very popular and full. The women's locker and shower room is very clean and put together. I've never had an issue in this area to complain about. Just bring your own lock!
I'm sure everyone hates the parking here as much as I do. It is horrible, I often find myself circling the lot many times. The gym is located in a place that has other stores and restaurants which parking is shared with. The only really good, comfortable time to come to this gym is as soon as it opens. Thats the only time I am fully happy with my gym time at...
Read moreLet me begin with this: I am new to California and LA Fitness; however, I belonged to several gyms in NJ and had a few months experience working at one.
That being said, this gym is very large and still remains VERY busy outside of normal work hours. I've been a member for about a month and there are 9 stairmaster machines, 3-4 of which have had "scheduled for service" signs taped to them.
The staff at the front desk are often very standoffish. They have to physically scan you in and there have been a few instances where I present my barcode and I wait for the staff person, sometimes on the phone, having to lean over and scan my barcode. This seems a very silly system and an easy fix.. Also, there are zero staff on any floors that I have seen with the exception of the first floor or a man emptying garbage cans. (There are 4 floors). Because of this lack of staff, people drop their paper towels on the floor and others drop very heavy weights repeatedly.
The gym is also a bit gross as there are no sanitary wipes for any equipment;rather, there are some paper towel machines with hand sanitizer pumps next to them with a sign stating you can apply the sanitizer to the paper towels to wipe machines. Why not just stock proper wipes? Meanwhile, the bathrooms in the locker room have NO paper towel machines. And ONE hand dryer. Again, this makes for a messy bathroom and seems like this could be a really simple fix..
Overall, decent gym for the money, especially if you have time to wait for the machine or weights you want and have time to...
