I was debating on whether I should leave a review or not, and I’ve decided I will because I think it’s important and necessary for people to gain insight of this place before they visit. I traveled far to visit Upperroom because I love some of their worship songs and I love to see the love and devotion for God of people that attend. But I was very disappointed/unsettled at the false teaching of this church and I would like to share my experience so people don’t make my same mistake. I’m so thankful the LORD gave me discernment and opened my eyes to the truth.
First thing I wanted to point out is the repetition of the lyrics of their worship songs like they’re trying to feel something. Like a breakthrough will happen/God will incline His ear to them more/that’s the way they’re supposed to worship when Jesus specifically says in Matthew 6:7-8, “and when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him” It sounded like a broken record and like a brainwashing.
Following worship, the pastor’s wife picked one verse from 1 Peter and asked people to raise their hands if they wanted to get out of darkness into light. There was no mention of the gospel — that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again on the third day, and by believing in Him we will not perish but have eternal life. And that by His blood we have become adopted by our Father in Heaven.. She kept pressuring people to raise their hands when the Holy Spirit is NOT forceful. He is a gentleman. My friend and I left after this because we couldn’t handle the phoniness.
When we got home I went to check the sermon online to see if there was maybe a turn around with the message. I was very disappointed and frustrated to say the least. It was a prosperity gospel and absolutely no mention of Jesus. The pastor used verses out of context to fit his agenda. They’re building a bigger church, and he kept using verses from Exodus and Ezekiel when we’re not under that covenant anymore! Born again Christians are the church and the Holy Spirit dwells in us when we’re saved. We are the temple of God! It was all so wrong it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
There needs to be Repentance in that church and correct biblical teaching. I truly feel sad for people who go there regularly trying to build their relationships with God. PLEASE if you’re hungry for the truth, read the Bible yourself and attend a biblically sound church so you know the truth. And Who is the truth? Jesus! Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6. Not through a church building. I give this place 2 stars because I think it’s beautiful to see young adults so hungry for God. But in reality it’s 1 star.
Thank you...
Read moreI have been watching UPPERROOM Sunday mornings for half a year now (as my church only has night services). I have been blessed by their worship and their messages for years. I have seen a few reviews claiming that this place has a “false spirit” and is just trying to be “trendy,” but I would like to inform the public that this place is completely submitted to the Holy Spirit. I have seen their willingness to let the Holy Spirit move in ways that is not trendy at all. In fact, it is so radical and strange to the public eye that it might make people feel weird. So no, they are not trying to be trendy. Secondly, as I’ve watched such shameless devotion to the move of the Holy Spirit in this place and heard their stories and backgrounds, I’ve come to know that this place is solely focused on pleasing God and being obedient to Him - and they do not care at all how that looks to others. This is a place of pure devotion. It may be weird or scary to some people, but it is undignified and glorifying to God. The Holy Spirit is moving here, and I believe the work that God is doing here is a foretaste of what the Spirit is about to do across the world. Thank you UPPERROOM leadership for being obedient to what God has for the church. There’s no such thing as a perfect organization because people aren’t perfect, but the reverence that these people have for the Holy Spirit is going to allow God to move in incredible ways...
