I went to pick up a hard drive to back up my computer at Walmart. They were waiting for the one I wanted to come in and recommended I have UBreakiFix look at it in the meantime.
So I took my laptop in to UBF because it was running slowly and had a message Windows did not load properly. Mgr Toyston said it needed to have Windows reinstalled. I hesitated and said I was worried about doing that because I didn't have a backup of documents or pics. He assured me repeatedly that they did this all the time and it wouldn't be a problem and I wouldn't lose anything.
I got a call the next day it was ready. I also got a request to review UBF on Google which I did in 5-star glowing colors. It was supposed to cost $109.99 plus tax. But when I got there Toyston said it was working great but he wasn't going to charge me, which was my first alarm. Who can afford to do that in this economy? I told him I didn't feel right about not paying so he charged me for a diagnostic only ($26).
I was excited and started to boot it up right there. To my horror, everything from my desktop to pictures to docts were GONE! He said not to worry because he'd backed it up to my OneDrive account but I explained I didn't have a OneDrive account set up. He looked panicked and told me to take it home and let it run all night and it would copy everything from OneDr back to laptop. If it didn't, I was to bring it back next day at 10 and they'd restore it. But when I got there at 10, Toyston wasn't even there and staff said he didn't even come in til 11 daily. They said they knew what happened and they were ready to start work on it.
Next I heard, Toyston turned this mess over to another tech (Chris) who tried and tried to restore files using multiple apps. Chris claimed he was able to get everything back to the tune of 500,000 files. However, there are only 437 Word/Excel docts (NOT folders and not thousands) and all of my named folders are gone and every last item came up named "recovered doct" without any other name or folder and all are dated 5/13/25. Only 36 Excel docts (not folders) came back...of those only 3 would open. Rest either said IRM protected or corrupted. Only 437 Word docts are there but none of them are opening saying corrupted or brought back in 2007 Word version. 437 docts is a far cry from 500,000. UBF is telling me to open every bizarre named folder to try to hunt for my documents/pics. As to pictures, I'm still hunting for the majority but of those that have been found, they were pulled out of carefully organized, named/dated folders and dumped into a Public Downloads file that all say "recovered docts" and a number of those say corrupt and can't be opened.
Toyston also restructured my laptop set-up and assigned an old Outlook account as my main email. He deleted 4 Avast security programs, my HP printer program, my iCloud program, my Word and Excel programs and God only knows what else. l'm still hunting.
Bottomline, I have cried til I can't cry any more. My parents and one sister have passed as has a friend who I spent 3 weeks in Europe with 20+ years ago and so are their pictures as are hundreds/thousands of friends, my grand children, etc.
UBreak tells me to just keep hunting. SERIOUSLY! This has been devastating. I've notified UBreak corporate of the mess and they said they don't guarantee anything about data loss. If I could give them a Minus ZERO ZERO ZERO...
Read moreTook my PS5 in to get the hdmi port replaced or fixed which I assumed was the problem because the picture started flickering suddenly. I was met by an employee that tried to get me to sign up for the “insurance plan” that would cost me $20/month which I could easily cancel at any time. He quoted me $174.99 for the repair before even looking at or running any diagnostic (red flag). He then explained that if I went with the insurance plan the cost of the repair would drop to $110. I’m not completely stupid and said that I’d pay for the repair in full. He then said that it would take about a week for the repair to be done which is a lot longer than the “same-day” commitment that I saw on their website.
I agreed to leave it with them because I didn’t have any other real options.
A couple of days later I received a call from them telling me that they had (past tense) to ship my ps5 to some other facility because of a part they didn’t have. But he said that they wouldn’t charge me anything more…was I supposed to thank them or something?
I didn’t like the idea of not having the option of saying NO before they decided to ship my ps5 to some other location.
Yesterday I got a message stating my ps5 was ready to be picked up. When I picked it up the same guy (little guy with his hat on backwards) asked me again if I wanted to purchase the insurance. I said no. He then had me pay the bill. Before I left I asked why they had to send my ps5 away. At first he looking like he didn’t follow my question. When I reworded it he said that it was to complex of a repair for them at that location. It required “special” equipment. Nothing about a part they didn’t have as I was told a week prior. I knew right there that I might be screwed. He reminded me about the 1 year warranty as I walked out the door.
When I got it home and fired it up I found 2 apps had been installed onto the drive. Both games that I would’ve never downloaded even in my most drunken nights. Some chicken combat BS that I deleted immediately. Then after only using it for 1 hour the screen started flickering again…exactly the same way it was flickering before bringing it in for repair. I looked at the actual HDMI port and I doesn’t look new at all and honestly it looks like it wasn’t even replaced. If it is a new part then it’s a seriously shitty part.
After reading the reviews on here I’m very hesitant to bring it in because i have ZERO confidence in their honesty or technical ability to do the right thing. I’m going to try to contact their corporate office and see what can be done but this has been a complete waste of my...
Read moreThey blew it, BIG TIME, with me. I took my computer in with issues, and they decided they needed to reinstall the operating system. We talked about backing up the files etcetera, which they assured me they would do. Upon bringing it home I find that there are no files, folders, downloads or photos anywhere on the computer. So I called them up and they told me to bring it back and they assured me they could find them and pull everything back from the cloud or where ever they supposedly saved them. So, another 70 mile round trip and I dropped the computer off. While I was waiting in the shop I was told that there weren't any files or folders to back up. That there wasn't anything there when they first started working on it. So, I'm thinking, at that point, a phone call would have been the obvious next step, asking me if I wanted them to continue installing a new operating system, stating that all files etc. would be lost if they proceeded. I would have said to stop and do not do anything at that point. However I wasn't given that option because they never called. I've had the computer for quite some time and I assure you, there were files, folders, downloads, and photos on it. I left the computer with them and drove home. A few days later I got a phone call telling me that there were no files or folders or anything that they could find, and said again that there was nothing on there to begin with. I left it with them so they could work on it some more and because I didn't want to drive back down there again at that time. I finally went to pick it up today and brought it home. When I left the store, I got no apology, no "sorry", no refund. When I got home and plugged it in, it won't even start up. I now have a door stop. I've called them and told them the issue and he suggested I bring it back down there, finally offering a refund of my original payment. That will be a total of 280 miles (plus 70 more if I have to leave it) IF I go, which wipes out the refund amount. I've lost ALL confidence in this place, along with everything that was on my computer. I'm one UNhappy camper, and will not be going in with a phone or...
