Davenport - tried Mission BBQ on the way to northern Michigan, we found Mission BBQ to be clean, friendly, fast, and so delicious we stopped there again on the way back. They offer samples if you can’t decide. We had the multi meat plates (sample as many as possible): pulled pork, sliced brisket, turkey, sausage links, baby back rib, and chopped brisket (remember two visits). Mac-n-chez, corn casserole, beans, fries, and potato salad (we upsized our sides to test more options)… While my favorites may differ from yours, I am not a fan of pre slathered meats (I wasn’t as pleased with chopped brisket pre sauced) but it may be the sauces I wasn’t thrilled with. They have like 8 sauce options so one will likely fit your taste. For me great smoked food doesn’t need sauce, to that extent I recommend pulled pork, turkey, sliced brisket, sausage, and I really enjoyed the rib bone (baby back) they need no enhancement they were superb! We both loved the corn casserole & fresh cut fries, Carol enjoyed the Mac-n-chez (I only like her homemade Mac-n-chez). The potato salad was fine but I wasn’t a big fan of the beans (again a sauce thing I think). This place is dedicated to military, police, fire, ems so it’s hard not to love the interior. If you find yourself hungry (really hungry) near Davenport, head over to Mission BBQ but bring a hearty appetite because their portions are very generous (and excellent price point value). Mission BBQ was so good we plan a Harley ride back down there before riding season ends just to go...
Read moreWe recently moved to the quad cities and of course we want to know where the good bbq is. We were told that Mission is one of the better bbq joints in the area. As a vet, I loved the theme and ode to military and first responders. So, we just got some spare ribs to take back. We ordered 10 bones but got a whole rack. Can't complain about that... they even tossed in some cornbread. Me, I like my ribs somewhere closer to competition than fall of the bone for doneness, with a nice smoke ring. That being said, these bones were so fall off the bone the meat fell apart when trying to pick it up. A bit over done for me. The rub they use is strong, I'm not sure but I would say it's heavy on the paprika (very red). So overall, I thought it was decent. I would go back and try some other things and maybe try to get the meat right after they pull it out of the smoker. Oh, they don't have traditional smokers or a pit, they have some traeger type indoor smoker/cooker. The sauces... this is the toughest part of bbq joints to me. I don't care for vinegar based sauces, I like a bourbon based dark rich and spicy sauce. We got 3 sauces, Texas Twang, Tupelo Honey Hot and the Rocky Mountain to try. The Texas Twang was the thickest. The other two were thinner. Wife liked the Tupelo the most. Me, I liked the mix of the Tupelo and the Rocky Mtn. Overall, better than I was expecting, but they could be better. We...
Read moreWe had a fabulous meal! I had the sampler with brisket and ribs -- the brisket was juicy and utterly delectable, and the ribs were sauceless but with seasoned with a tasty rub, beautifully tender. I tried the broccoli salad as a side and I can say without a doubt it was the best broccoli salad (with raisins, cheese, a sweet creamy dressing) that I've ever had. My husband had a brisket sandwich with fries and baked beans, and he was given extra brisket on the side of his sandwich. There are six tasty sauce options on the table (I particularly liked the Chicago and Smoky Mountain sauces) and there are several spicier options available. I was stuffed and my husband could not finish his sides. Everything was wonderful. Drinks and condiments are self service, but a very friendly staff member bustled around, refreshing supplies, cleaning, chatting with customers. The decor of the restaurant features pictures and memorabilia from servicemembers and first responders - very inspiring. When I mentioned that my husband is a Vietnam vet, we were invited to bring his picture in for the wall. A little on the noisy side (country music) but not bad. I think this is now our favorite barbecue place --...
