This place was hyped up to my boyfriend and I, so we drove from Toledo to go. However, I wasn’t impressed. It just seemed like an average store to me. Would I go again if I was in the vicinity? Yes. Would I make the drive to go there again? No. I would rather make the drive to Jungle Jim’s in Cincinnati.
I found myself overwhelmed many times due to multiple customers in one small aisle. At one point, it was one person standing there with a cart who was holding up the aisle traffic both ways. I know there isn’t much room to expand the store, but it felt cramped and overwhelmed my entire visit.
My boyfriend and I spent close to two hours walking around the store and looking at what they had. It was neat to see what they stocked that was different from my local Meijer’s, such as multiple different types of watermelon, and several other exotic fruits. I did wish that they had more types of cherries, grapes, and berries than they did — they were ones I could get at my grocery store. We did get a yellow watermelon, which I recommend buying and trying! Also, as someone who isn’t from the Midwest, we were able to buy (frozen) pasties, which made me excited to try after all the hype I’ve heard about. Especially with different types! I was also excited about the cheese wall, as someone whose favorite snack is cheese.
I will say, as others have noted, some prices are better than your local grocery store, and others are expensive. Not to mention, I’ve seen A LOT of the snacks and candy that they have at TJ Maxx, and cheaper.
The only reason I’m taking a star off is due to feeling like I was limited in some aspects. For starters, they have two massive open peanut mounds that you can basically just shovel your own peanuts into a bag. As someone who is anaphylactic to peanuts, I wasn’t a fan of that, especially with it being near other produce and not other nuts. I would’ve just rather they sold bagged peanuts like they did in the other kinds (walnuts, almonds, etc). Due to that, I did not feel comfortable walking in that general vicinity or even purchase anything near it for that reason. In addition to that, I wanted to try some of the jams/jellies that they make themselves, but that’s also made on the same equipment as peanuts. Bummer.
Also, shoutout to the worker that when my boyfriend and I asked where the restrooms were, said “where the restroom sign is.” It’s a small sign that hangs from the ceiling that shares wordage with something else. Just look up if you...
Read moreWe went for the Chipotle Olive Oil but the bin was just about empty. We squeezed out 1 bottle. Then discovered the Tuscan Olive Oil was delicious and bought 3 of those. Of course we traveled around the store with a draft beer in our cart. We didn't buy any sweet potatoes but apparently they are a BIG thing there. Look at the pile of them. Same with cheese. I never saw a wheel of cheese so large anywhere so of course I had to take a picture of that. We did buy the Buddha Hand's. The exact one you see in the middle of the picture is now in my kitchen just waiting for me to get creative. We also left with 2 pizzas. Kinda expensive but the meat lovers pizza was loaded with meat. The pickle pizza not so much. Could have used more pickles. But maybe that's me. I love pickles and also had picked up some fresh horseradish pickles so I could have topped my pizza off with more. Overall I said about 3 times as we browsed around: "I love this place!" On the way home we made a plan to come back when the outside picnic area and beer garden is open and there are plants to buy because it's about 80 miles from where we live. This place is a treat for anyone who is alive and likes to eat and find things they can't find other places and pick up staples also.
Update 2024: We still love this place even though we went last week and wanted to get some of their smoked paprika and both bins were scraped clean. I guess that's pretty popular stuff. I know we thought it was delicious. We also were amazed by the variety of...
