I have never attended Douglas in person, living over 3000 miles away from it in central England. Yet I feel compelled to defend it against the haters I've read about on Facebook.
I like to listen to or watch media services between my physical church ones, especially now I'm working every other Sunday. However, I've lost count of how many messages I've switched off in disgust at their fundamentalist, discriminatory hypocrisy. Surely Christ was about the liberal ideals of love, acceptance and inclusiveness?
When I found myself unsubscribing from yet another “Christian” organisation's content, I began to despair of finding one on the same page as me. For that to be happening in a time when hate and discrimination are rightly outlawed defies any kind of belief.
So I typed “progressive Christian churches” into Google and got led to Douglas's YouTube services. Instantly I felt right at home there with the warm, charismatic and funny Pastor Sal showing what Christianity is all about. God works through him and his congregation just as I thought He would. They've made me feel so welcome on Facebook and they'll do the same for you however you attend the Douglas services. I strongly advise you do and get yourself some wonderful travelling companions for your...
Read moreWe are an open and affirming congregation, everyone welcome, no exceptions. I have been a member here for almost 10 years now. I fell in love and at home since the moment I walked in. We currently have a Pastor who has the most loving and dynamic personality, and has done a lot to increase the size of our congregation. Currently we have several active groups to be a part of, from social Justice, environmental, Tables of Six dinners so we can to know each other better, interesting workshops on Shamanism, world religions, prayer, open meditation on Wednesday nights to mention a few. Our congregation is very welcoming, our pianist is INCREDIBLE, and plays a great postlude. Communion is served at every service, and again, everyone is welcome to the table. We are also a progressive church, valuing questions more than answers. My husband's ashes are buried in our memorial garden, and I plan on being buried here as well. Please don't hesitate to come in, truly as you are. Gay, straight, transgender, disabled, disheartened, or just curious, and experience our...
Read moreI moved to the state over 7 years ago. I tried several different churches to find one that would nourish me spiritually and challenge me to be strong in my faith. The moment I walked in the doors I felt a calming presence wash over me. After experiencing the service, hearing Pastor Sal, and mingling with the people multiple times I knew that this was the place for me. Only after having been an active member of this church and getting to know Pastor Sal personally have I come to realize what it means to not just talk the talk but actually to walk the walk. Pastor Sal has never faltered in showing love, kindness, and compassion to everyone he meets. Whether you are a member of our church or not, his consistent demeanor and message is always how Jesus asked us to live. I totally respect this man and wish more people would be as loving and compassionate as he is. That is the message of the Bible. To love one another, help the weak, and fight for justice for everyone no matter who you are. That is real love and...
