I hate writing a bad review for a small business, but honestly I'm really surprised at the number of positive reviews for this property. We found for the price paid (about $600/night with taxes and fees), this was an exceptionally poor value. ||Rooms: The rooms have had some interior decorating updating, but bathrooms have not been updated. I found the dated tub to not be appealing. I also truly hated the fireplace that provided an open view between the bedroom and the shower. The openness to the bathroom eliminated privacy. One of our rooms also lacked WiFi during our entire stay (again, we paid $600/nights....wifi is expected). This created a problem for our son who was trying to work. Front desk staff said they would tell the manager when she returned on Monday which did not help us. I was rather surprised that the Manager is not available on peak summer weekends.||Common Spaces: The lobby is extremely basic and in need of some interior decorating. It is not appealing at all when you enter (again...expectations are different at $600/night). The cottages all face the parking lot. I was really glad I did not book them. There is a nice yard in the back. I would suggest that the hotel do a brief tour of the grounds when guests check in and show them the green space and where the bikes are stored as this does improve the initial impressions. We found these areas on our own through a side window.||Breakfast: There is no breakfast room in this hotel. When you arrive, you are allowed to pick a half hour time window for when your breakfast is delivered. If you are one of the last to check in, you might get an earlier or later slot than what you prefer. The breakfast is delivered to the room. We had a very uninviting breakfast space in our room that seated two. Given we were traveling with our son who was in our 2nd room, we ended up eating in the lobby which was not an appealing space and we felt like we needed to be quiet as the table was right outside of someone else's room. I did not like this set-up at all. We also found the breakfasts to be small portions. Our adult son was training for a marathon. Given we were paying full rate for a room for him, we ordered two breakfasts for his room on our 2nd day after we saw the portion sizes. Instead of providing 2 breakfasts, they gave him a half portion of each entree. I found this to be cheap given the room price.||Location: I would not call this an in-town location. To get to the middle of town, you have about a 16 minute walk along a busy road pass residential. This does not seem long, but when it is an extremely hot weekend, it felt long! Parking is a huge issue in Saugatuck so you will likely want to walk. On our 2nd day, we learned from the front desk that a shuttle can be ordered. This information should have been provided to guests at check-in as the shuttle is quite useful.||So....sadly, this is a negative review. If we had been paying about half the price that we paid, I might have come away with different feelings. However, expectations increase when you charge the rates...
Read moreWell we had high hopes after glowing recommendations from several of our friends and not to mention the extremely high price tag of over $500/night for our 2 day stay. We were greated by the inn keeper and he helped us with our bags...so far so good. Then we recieved our nightly dessert and it was delicious.
We didn't know at the time that we only got service for one. We found out the next morning, when we received the wrong breakfast that was for a different single occupant room. We had to text the inn keeper and the rectified the order.
Next we are getting ready to head out for the day and we hear our door unlock and open with no warning. We find ourselves staring at what appeared to be a young boy with red hair, he looks just as surprised as us and quickly turns, shuts the door and runs away. We again have to text the inn keeper to find out how someone could open our door when we had a unique key code, he apologized and said the boy worked at the hotel. He looked Iike a guest and not a worker.
We come back from dinner to our room and find the thermostat is in a holding pattern and the air conditioner will not come back on until 1145pm, we wake up in the morning and the room is hot and the air is on hold yet again. Then we recieved a message from the inn keeper that our selected breakfast time that we selected was unavailable and that our breakfast would not be delivered at our scheduled time. We sent a message back saying that the time was pre-written on the form, and again they apologized and said the text was not meant for us.
I understand that staffing is tough and places are running on skeleton crews, but for over $500/night we could have stayed at much larger and better managed establishments. There was only apology after apology after apology, no offer to make it right.
The room was newly renovated, but way too small, everything was crammed in as tight as possible and was not laid out very well.
We spoke to other people in town and found that they paid significantly less for larger accommodations and a better experience.
Needless to say, my wife and I won't be returning or recommending the Hotel Saugatuck to...
Read moreEntirely deceiving photos. Hotel is located 10 yards from a heavily trafficked road with cars traveling by non-stop. The hotel is in fact across the road from the lake. In a one-minute period, I observed (and heard) 25 cars go by in both directions.
For the hefty price ($374 per night not including taxes & fees and considered “off season” per the inn managers who stated they had a skeletal staff due to a seasonal break), travelers expect a warm & inviting interior when in fact it is sparsely furnished with no rugs whatsoever throughout the main portion of the hotel and rooms. With wood floors and lack of rugs, guests can hear every single footstep of fellow guests 24/7. There is also not a comfortable or inviting common space typically found in inns and B&Bs (perhaps this is why the name is “Hotel” Saugatuck even though it is no where near the size or luxury of hotels at this price point) although the people who run the hotel refer to themselves as “Inn Keepers”.
The four-season porch in my room had only one window that could be opened and its screen was ill-fitting, which caused a gap, allowing for mosquitoes and other bugs to enter. The said porch - an ample space overlooking the traffic with a view Lake Kalamazoo on the other side - included only two faux rattan chairs with outdoor cushions and a small similar side table. The entire space (bedroom, porch, bathroom) room was completely void of personality in the form of wall art (one wall with two matching picture) and not a single rug in the rather large space. The porch also contains the hanging wall contraption for any clothes you may have as the room does not have a closet in it (see photo with robes).
Again, no rugs in the main bedroom (bath tubs are actually IN the bedroom) and faux fireplace in fact does not even include faux wood but is rather plastic crystals with a tech image of flames.
If you’re looking for a “home away from home”, “serene retreat”, or “beautifully manicured property” with space for a walk or privacy from traffic, this is most certainly not the...
